Katie Bell was staring at me.

Again.

"What do you want, Bell?" I asked her, somewhat warily. It was hard not to like her, and I was giving it my all. She was three years younger than me, and a team member. No way was I going to ask her out.

"You're boring," she said, her tone thoughtful, looking at me as though studying my face deeply.

Had I been paying attention, I would have heard the rest of the team laugh as they left the locker room. They thought they hid it well, but I had heard the whispers. They all said the two of us would be together by the end of the year. I was determined to prove them wrong.

"I am not!" I argued indignantly.

"You are," she said in a soft voice, not mean or taunting, just…informative. It was a bit eerie really. "You try to hide it, but the sweaters give you away."

"I'm not boring!" I said again. "I do lots of fun things!"

"You play Quidditch," she told me. "And you read about Quidditch. And you map out Quidditch plays. And you watch Quidditch. Did I miss anything?"

"Yes!" I cried. Then IO paused, thinking.

"You see," she said matter-of-factly. "You're boring."

"Am I really?" I asked, defeated.

She nodded sympathetically.

"Well how do I be less boring?" I asked her desperately.

"Do something spontaneous!" she told him, making an absurd arm-flailing gesture to demonstrate the spontaneity.

I nodded. "Spontaneous…" I muttered. "But what would be-" But Katie, somehow, had already managed to disappear.

All night I pondered what I could do the next day to be spontaneous. Because I realized that Katie was absolutely right. My life was boring, and it was only going to get worse if I didn't do something about it.

I didn't sleep at all, but I still didn't think of anything. And that was when it hit me. You couldn't plan on doing something spontaneous! Maybe it would just some to me. Maybe…

But the next day at breakfast, I still couldn't think of anything. I noticed Katie looked at me out of the corner of her eye several times, as if watching for my spontaneity. I couldn't disappoint her!

But by lunch nothing had come to me. I sat there, gloomily eating, dodging questions about my bad mood.

And at dinner, nothing. I was becoming increasingly flustered when Quidditch practice rolled around, and Katie was looking as though she'd given up all hope.

"I told you," she said matter-of-factly, as I approached the broom shed. "You're just a boring person. Embrace the boredom!"

And that's when I did it. I don't even remember if the idea came to e before or after I actually did it, but one second, I was wishing Katie would shut up, and the next, I was kissing her.

And it was nice.

I didn't particularly want to stop kissing her, but the other team members were making catcalls and rude remarks, so I thought there might be a better time and place for this. I pulled back, and for the first time in her life, Katie Bell was speechless.

"Spontaneous enough?" I asked, smirking. "Because I could do it again if you need more convincing."

She grinned at me. "Ah, but that wouldn't be spontaneous then, would it?" she asked before grabbing her broom and walking to the field, ignoring the rest of the team completely.
