"It's just a game", he whispers, his heart is pounding, but his face he keeps a stone mask, he can't show her the truth, he can't do that to her, so he continues, "I hate to loose, you're free to go." The pain in her eyes makes him sick, but he knows this pain is all for her and she is what matters most so he bears it, like a true man in love.
She stands, tears in her eyes, she is barely able to whisper, "Thank you" before getting up and walking away, pieces of her broken heart shattering across the floor. She stops near the door because suddenly, she doesn't want to leave; she doesn't want him to win, to have the last word. She stops and turns for a second, to tell him, tell him that final biting comment, meant leave her the victor, to keep her in control.
"Chuck, why'd you do that?" Blair hears Serena from behind and her mouth closes to stop her retort. She waits, Chuck please, say something, anything.
"Because I love her," he pauses, pain and self-loathing evident in his voice, "and I can't make her happy."
In that moment, her heart explodes in a collision of pain and elation and tears once again jump into her eyes, but she smiles.
She smiles because she knows deep down inside that even though they can't work out now, their Chuck and Blair, Blair and Chuck and their inevitable.
