Every Other Time

Sometimes it's black
Sometimes it's white
"Lily! I need your help with our potions assignment," James said, stopping her in the middle of the hallway. Lily smirked.
"The great James Potter asking me for help?" she asked, holding a hand dramatically to her head. "I'm going to faint from shock."
James scowled as everyone around him chuckled. "Yes, I need your help. Is it counter-clockwise or clockwise that I stir it if I want to make Draught of Living Death?"
"It's both," Lily said, and the silence was suddenly pronounced.
"How can it be both? I'm almost positive that the book said it was counter-clockwise…" James trailed off.
"It's both," Lily repeated firmly.
James shrugged. "If you say so, Lily. If you say so."
Sometimes she's wrong
Sometimes I'm right
Lily was hiding out in the girls' lavatory, not wanting anyone, least of all James Potter, to see her crying.
James had been right. She didn't want to believe it, but he had been.
"Lily?" the voice of her friend Mary McDonald was muffled but Lily could still make it out.
"Yeah?"
"Snape's outside the common room door, threatening to sleep there until you come talk to him." The disapproval was fairly evident.
"I'll go talk to him."
As Lily left the girl's bathroom, she ran into James, who appeared to be waiting for her as well.
"I'm sorry, Lily."
And that was all that was said. Words could not heal a hurt that didn't want to be healed.
Sometimes we talk about it or we figure it out
But then she just changes her mind
Instead of fighting, as was their usual form of conversation, Lily calmly explained that she felt James wasn't taking on enough of the work. She felt put upon because James was always at Quidditch practice or hanging out with the other three boys too much.
James looked at her, blinking slowly behind his glasses, and agreed.
"You actually want to take on more work?" she asked incredulously. He nodded.
Lily thought about it for a minute, and finally outlined what was workable with James's schedule.
But the next day, she had changed her mind.
James shook his head, grinning.
Sometimes she's hot
Sometimes I'm cold
"James! I've been trying to get your attention for the last hour! I need to talk to you." Lily was beside herself. She was almost sure that James was out with another girl or that he was looking.
James rolled his eyes. They'd only been married for six months, and to top that off, she was pregnant.
"Lily. You know how busy I am. I don't have time to answer every owl you send me," he said, wrapping his arms around her and kissing her soundly. When he released her, her eyes followed him worriedly.
"James, I really need to talk to you. What if he gets us before the baby is born? Who's going to take care of it?"
"Lily, we've both covered this. If anything happens to us, Sirius will take care of the baby. I promise everything will be alright."
And after this, Lily never mentioned it again.
Sometimes my head wants to explode
But when I think about it, I'm so in love with her
When all was said and done, James loved Lily, despite her temper, despite her tendency to worry, and because of her capacity to love. He would wait until she fell asleep, while whispering sweet nothings in her ear, letting her know that he was going to be next to her every day for the rest of their lives.
And when she was asleep, he would cuddle her body close to his, kissing her forehead gently and wrapping his arm around her. She would snuggle close, sighing.
James knew that he had made the right choice, knew that he had married the right woman for him.
