Chapter 1: Memory

People see the world as a sad place, a place where the right to be happy is reserved for the strong and the lucky. He was both.

But it seems for him, it will take more that that to avoid the harsh reminders of reality and the lonely tragedy of nightmares.

It will take someone like her to save him.

"say it again"

Her voice didn't sound imperative, it never did. But at this moment it held a compelling frailty.

"Don't make me look like a fool again…Petra"

His voice sounded foreign to him. He avoided her gaze as he locked his attention instead to the bright crescent illuminating above them.

"Please…Levi"

Her golden eyes sparkled as tears were threatening to fall. He almost couldn't bare the vision. It made him question if all of this was a mistake.

If he was to face defeat he might as well give it his all. This was the point of no return.

He took her right hand and he enveloped it over his heart. "I Lov—"

Before Levi could even finish, Petra had already pulled him by his cravat and into the warmth of her lips. It was sweet and gentle like the memorable breeze of a beautiful spring. All the restrained emotions flooded out of him. The mask of humanity's strongest crumbled in an instant as she touched his cheek. He was in complete bliss.

With the moon as their only witness they shared their first kiss.

It didn't last long for the ground crumbled beneath them and she was gone as if the wind blew her away. When Levi turned around to search for her, he stood face to face with a huge tree. This scenario was all too familiar. He doesn't want to look as if he knew that there was horror awaiting him if he depressed his line of sight.

He finally looked down.

There he saw her lying in front of him, her head cradled by the red stained bark. He could have saved her and he knew that this sight was his ultimate punishment for all his sins.

He somehow knew how this will end. Him, gathering her body as a herd of titans approached them. Him, slashing every one of them, blood coating them, just like the rain.

"don't you dare leave me…Petra " His steely eyes focusing on the girl trembling in his embrace. With her eyes shut and breathing heavy she called his name.

"Levi…"

He could feel the beat of her heart slow in an alarming pace.

"Levi…"

Adrenaline was pumping but his heart was clenching. She was whispering his name like a prayer as she started to slip from his hold.

"Levi!"

Eyes flew open. He was back.

Levi glared at his commander's rude awakening. He was greeted by an emphatic smile and the smell of excessively strong bleach. He rubbed his temples as he felt the early signs of a headache.

"you having that dream again?" Erwin sat opposite to him.

Levi slumped back on his chair, with the ceiling momentarily interesting him. He breathed in as if taking a long drag.

"It wasn't a dream…."

He entwined his fingers with the small hand of the sleeping form beside him.

A perfect fit.

"…It was a memory"
