"Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday to you! Happy birthday dear Arianna,
happy birthday to you!" sang Lily and James. Arianna was turning 5 years
old. She had been living with Lily and James for three years.
"Lily?" Arianna asked.
"Yes, Aria?"
"When you have your baby, will you still love me?"
"I'll love you into the depths of eternity."
"What does that mean?"
"It means I'll love you forever," Lily whispered.
"Tomorrow," Arianna told James, "Anita, Lynn, Jacob and Sam are going to come for a birfday party." James nodded. This was what he called a 'Happy Family'. Happy five-year-old in a comfy nursery school, pregnant wife, good job.
"Come on, Arianna, please get your things on for nursery school," Lily prodded.
"Can I walk to the bus stop all by myself?"
Lily seemed to be pondering it.
"How about I walk with you to the corner, and then you can wait by yourself?"
"Okay-day," Arianna said, cheerfully pulling her green cloak on and accepting her rucksack from Lily.
James escorted the girls to the door and opened it.
"See you later, Ladies Lily and Arianna."
"Bye-bye, Jamsie!"
"See yah, Ariansie!"
Lily rolled her eyes and escorted Arianna out the door.
That afternoon, Lily went to collect Arianna from the bus stop. However, she wasn't there.
"Jaime!" she shouted, stopping the bus driver.
"Yeah?" Jaime asked.
"Where's Arianna?"
Jaime pointed and Lily dashed, only to find Arianna's crumpled body in the bushes.
Lily let out a strangled cry.
"JAMESJAMESJAMESJAMESJAMESJAMESJAMESJAMES!" she yelled like there was no tomorrow.
