DISCLAIMER: If I owned it I wouldn't have to write fanfic.

I'm hoping I got the dates right...

March 1985

John had dumped Dean and Sam off at Bobby's to look for the demon yet again.

It was already way past their bedtime and Dean could hear Bobby snoring in the next room as he held his little brother. He felt so alone and small when he looked out of the window and then back down at Sammy. He was only six years old and there were so many bad things out there.

"Don't worry Sammy, I'm always gonna watch out for ya. Daddy told me that it the most important job." Dean said proudly. But who's gonna watch out for me? Dean thought to himself.

"Mommy always said that angels were watching over me Sammy. But I think they're too busy watchin' Daddy and his friends or something. What do you think?"

"De." The two year old pointed into the corner of the room and giggled.

"Nothin' there Sammy. Bobby checked earlier."

MEANWHILE

"Anna..."

"Yes Uriel."

"God has a mission for us."

Castiel stood up. They'd been waiting for orders for decades. "What is it?"

"There's a demon that made a few deals involving children... we have to step in."

"Of course." Anna always loved children. "What do you know?"

"Not much. Just that we need to find these children and depending on what's happened, take preventative action... We know that most of their mothers died in a nursery fire."

"Why?" Castiel looked to Uriel.

"We don't know."

"Alright, I'll locate what children I can. Castiel, take over if something happens to me. Uriel, await my decision before acting." Anna disappeared with a gust of wind to search for the children.

And she found them. Most of them in loving homes aside from one Max Miller-which she prayed that the step-mother would take action soon. But there was something different about them... and then she found out exactly what that was.

Demon blood. It went against God and Uriel would surely go overboard and destroy whole families.

She even witnessed the Winchesters and how protective Dean was of his little brother.

"I think they're too busy..." The little boy broke her heart.

Then the small boy, Sam, saw her.

Anna couldn't bring herself to go back after that. There had to be hope for those boys.

She would lose her grace and fall.

"Castiel." Anna secretly summoned him before acting out her choice.

"Yes."

"I have a special job for you. Watch over a young boy."

"Does he have a name?"

"Dean. Dean Winchester." Anna turned and started to walk away.

"But why?"

She kept walking.

"Anna?"

And then she was gone in a flash of light.

"Anna!"

BACKTOSAMANDDEAN

"C'mon Sammy. Time to sleep." Dean lifted Sam onto the bed they were sharing. God, please let just one angel watch out for me. Cos' I gotta watch Sammy and sometimes I get scared. Dean turned his back on the window and missed the flash of light go across the sky.

He didn't know until over twenty years later he got his angel.

No one, not even Castiel or Anna ever told him how much it cost either.
