A/N: This takes place after the events of "Journey's End" but before "The Next Doctor" or any story involving the Eleventh Doctor. Major spoilers for "Journey's End".

The TARDIS came to rest on the ground – the Doctor didn't know where. Something had grabbed it and brought it here. That scared him.

He hesitated before going outside. He didn't know what was out there. And he didn't have a companion. He normally wouldn't admit how much he relied on them, even to himself, but he had lost track of the number of times he had been saved by Ace, Rose, Nyssa, or any of the others. Right now, he was alone, and he didn't know when or where he was.

He opened the door, and came face to face with a squad of Judoon.

"Where am I?" he asked.

"The Shadow Proclamation," came the reply. "You have been summoned here by –"

"He's here? He's here?" The Shadow Architect rushed past the Judoon, stopping right in front of the Doctor. "Thank the gods! I didn't even know that temporal phase generator would work!"

The Doctor's eyes went wide with understanding. "You brought me here?"

"Yes, Doctor," the Shadow Architect replied. "We need you. We're up against an enemy we cannot defeat, and you're the best expert on the subject we could think of."

A range of possibilities shot through the Doctor's head. Daleks? Cybermen? A rogue Time Lord? Whatever it was, if the Shadow Proclamation couldn't stop them, it was serious, and he had to help.

"Well, I'll do what I can to help."

"Thank you." The Architect began walking. "If you need anything at all, ask and we shall give it to you. The enemy will be here in a few days, so we must work quickly."

"Well, you could tell me who we're fighting."

The Shadow Architect turned to the Doctor. She named the last species he would ever expect.

"The humans."
