This is a sort of songfic (What You Waiting For by Gwen Stefani) and my first fanfiction. I've never written one before so bear with me.
Rarity shuffled about slowly, fixing up Carousel Boutique with a sad frown on her face. Her mind kept travelling back to the fashion contest held in Ponyville two days ago with a mix of rural and urban designers participating in order to show off their designs for a chance to meet Photo Shoot. She had entered backed by her friends' encouragement and the memory of Photo Shoot taking a liking to her designs and using Fluttershy as a model. However, when the day came Fluttershy refused to model for Rarity even though she had already agreed and been measured, putting the needs of her treasured pets in front of Rarity's. The result was disaster.
Two months of hard work was wasted in an instant. Rarity had crafted her main dress with the colours and style to fit Fluttershy in mind, but when on Twilight Sparkle, the only replacement pony she could find in time for the show, they looked revolting. With no other option, she was forced to endure the criticising laughter of the crowd of ponies, mocking her "fashion sense" and Rarity was completely heartbroken. Worst of all, she couldn't forget the look of confusion on Photo Finish's face; it was like a tattoo on the inside of her eyelid. After racing out of the relatively small but well decorated showroom she sped back to Carousel Boutique and then the tears came. The tears came and they wouldn't stop.
Of course she didn't blame Fluttershy since animals were top priority in her kind friend's mind. From experience Rarity was fully aware that yelling at or even lecturing Fluttershy would no doubt bring tears from the pegasus, if not both ponies. Instead, she chose to steel herself against the sadness and humiliation that eating away from her inside and the feelings were finally beginning to overwhelm her after the two long, tiring days she had just had.
"What an amazing time..."
Her reputation was shattered and now ponies laughed at her in the streets like they did to Trixie. The only ones who still had faith in the unicorn's designing ideas were her closest friends, the Princesses and the Cutie Mark Crusaders.
"What a family..."
She thought of her friends and bearers of the other Elements of Harmony. The thought of them awkwardly trying to cheer her up made her cringe, and as a feeling of despair rushed over her she realised that would never redeem the same level of respect she had been given before the show.
Dropping to the floor, she finally gave in to the emotions causing a tornado of sadness inside her. Eyes stinging, trying to be as quiet as possible so as not to attract attention, the poor pony let out another barrage of tears. Her makeup began to run and the shimmering silver rug beneath her hooves became dampened.
"How did the years go by?"
Gwen Steponi's smooth voice flowed out of the radio, the tones reaching Rarity's ears and calming her. Through the sorrow and self-pity that was filling her mind, a conclusive decision had been made sub-conciously.
"Now it's only me..."
Time to pack. Rarity was going away for a long time.
Please let me know how I did, and if I should continue this. I don't really want it to be a oneshot, but it's all about the customers.
