All He Wanted.

He could remember it like it was yesterday. He had tried to hide his trembling as he stood before him, arm outstretched. He had nearly bitten his tongue in half in attempt not to call out in pain as the mark was etched onto his skin. Hot tears fell from slate eyes. When the elder man turned away from him, black cloak billowing about his ankles, he felt strong arms wrap around him. "I'm so proud of you, my son," ease settled over him at the familiar voice and a smile curved his lips. He had done it.

How stupid he had been. How foolish to believe that pleasing others had been what mattered most. He rowed quickly; the smell of salty air engulfing him. He should have been trembling; he was on a death mission. Yet, his hands were steady. It was ironic to him that this, of all things, was what brought him peace. To die for a cause he never thought he would have believed in. . .

He looked lovingly at the creature in front of him; a creature that blindly obeyed him. He had been such a creature only a few weeks ago, on missions and following orders. Then he had figured out his master's secret. It brought him such disgust, to think he had served a man so heinous. He had sold himself into slavery to a beast.

And all to make his parents proud.

His chest ached and his eyes stung. All he had ever wanted to do was make them proud, to give them the son they had always wanted.

And for a short time he had succeeded.

Until he had realized that, doing for the ones he loved the most, turned him into the person he least wanted to be.

The small boat jolted as it hit the rocky ledge and he inhaled deeply. Fresh tears once again fell from slate eyes but, this time not out of fear or pain but, out of shame and sorrow.

Sometimes what we wish for the most is what will be our downfall.
