"I'm honored," said Elisabeth Shannon. Wide eyed and exuding energy, she gushed, "So few people get this opportunity."
Maddy, her daughter, had a cough that was scaring the hell out of her. When you're child coughs blood, your own blood runs cold, especially a child with a history of breathing problems. A stay in the hospital revealed the equipment to help her breathe, a re-breather, was malfunctioning … Maddy felt like she should have known. She kicked herself. I am her mother! How could I not know?
She was selfish. She was distracted. She had lost touch with the most important parts of her life – her children and her husband. Elisabeth became consumed by the nonsense of life – work, bills, worries. She was drowning in the noise about her and couldn't hear that her child needed her.
When the Shannon's were offered the opportunity to be among the first humans to colonize Terra Nova, she and Jim made the decision in less than 24 hours. They'd escape the pollution and decay on earth. They could have a chance at clean air and water on Terra Nova. It was almost an after thought to consider there were dinosaurs on Terra Nova. Dinosaurs! Like her children played with in their Sim games and holograms. It was surreal … she knew, in theory, there would be dinosaurs there. She couldn't imagine, though, that they'd truly be a risk or danger. After all. humans on earth were safe from bears, mountain lions, and coyotes when they activated a laser like field around themselves. How could this not protect them against dinosaurs, too? They were so less evolved.
Jim laughed. Dinosaurs? Gimme a break…no effing way that the dinosaurs would be a real threat. Screw that… he had to get his family away from the rot and decay that surrounded him every day.
As a cop, he saw the worst of the worst. As if it weren't bad enough to here the constant news about water supplies drying up and nuclear waste contaminating more water sources, he had to deal with the chaos that ensues when people feel like they need to walk over each other to protect what was their – whether it was food, water, or shelter.
Dinosaurs? Get real. He had to give his family a chance. Yeah – we're going to Terra Nova. At least we'll have hope…
