Addison was tired.
She hadn't gotten a proper night's sleep in probably a week, ever since she checked into the hotel. Most of her time was spent at the hospital, working, so she could forget about her heartache.
Avoiding Derek as best as she could, Addison would leave a room when he entered, and walk the other way in a hallway if she saw him coming.
But today, she just didn't care. Walking around the hospital like a zombie, she barely knew what was going on around her.
So when she walked up to the surgery board to see her name being erased, it took her a second to realize it.
"Wait," she says, walking up to the nurse. "What are you doing?"
The nurse turns to her, bringing her arm down. "Chief of Surgery asked for it."
"Oh… Okay," Addison says, hoping she hadn't done anything wrong. "Thank you."
She turns the other way and heads to Dr. Webber's office.
--------
"Addison, you need sleep," says the Chief, shuffling some papers on his desk.
"I'm fine," she replies, sitting down in one of his chairs. "I'm a surgeon, I always need sleep."
"Get some rest, and I'll let you operate."
Addison looks at him for a second, planning her next argument; Richard stops looking through the papers.
"Go," he orders. "Now."
"Fine," she says, standing up. "I'll go."
---------
Tossing around in the bed, Addison fails to find a comfortable position. Turning around onto her back, she looks up at the ceiling and sighs. She closes her eyes, willing herself to fall asleep.
After a few moments, the sound of the door opening causes her to open her eyes and look over at it. As light fills the room, she blinks at the sudden brightness, looking at the silhouette standing in the doorway. It only takes a second to realize that it's her ex-husband.
Derek stands there for a moment, and they stare at each other, before he enters the room.
"I can't sleep," he says, looking at her.
"Me neither," she replies, returning his gaze.
He closes the door behind him before coming over to the bed. Addison moves closer to the wall as he sits down on the edge of the mattress.
He takes a second to remove his shoes, and then he brings his legs up onto the bed. She looks up at him as he lays down, resting his head on the pillow.
They lay there awkwardly, not saying anything for a few seconds, and not really knowing what to do.
Finally, Addison rolls over onto her side, facing the wall. He looks at the back of her head for as second before turning onto his side as well, facing her.
She makes the first move, scooting backwards so she could barely feel his warmth against her back.
Slowly picking up his arm, Derek drapes it over her waist and pushes himself closer to her. Taking a deep breath, he smells her hair before closing his eyes.
Addison curls up more, bringing her knees closer to the wall, and he instinctively forms his body against her, already half-asleep. His warmth is comforting to her, and she then closes her eyes, and finally gets the rest she so dearly needed.
