Cerulean oculars peer from within the sea of blankets and pillows, life springing to those babyish eyes as a hint of mirth bubbles into view. Asgore softens, reaching within the mound of blankets and removing the toddler from within the cocoon. Asriel whimpers as he is eased gently against his father's chest, his eyelids fluttering, struggling to stay awake.
"Go to sleep, my son," Asgore whispers in a hushed tone, nuzzling the child's forehead with the tip of his nose. Asriel only lets out an irritated grumble before his cracked eyelids slide shut, the cerulean fading from view, and leaving behind a sleeping and content goat baby.
Toriel is nestled into the comfy cushions of the old, creaky rocking chair when he steps into the nursery, wooden planks creaking beneath his massive form. She looks at him, her eyes straying to their sleeping son for a few brief moments, before she softens.
"Thank you," she whispers as he presses Asriel into her arms, the queen shifting the baby easily against her chest. As she smiles at him again, Asgore realizes that she isn't just thanking him for retrieving their son, but for everything.
"No, thank you," Asgore murmurs, nuzzling her affectionately and bumping noses gently. Toriel seems rather pleased, with Asriel bundled against her chest and a warm flush spreading across her face. Asgore is content to pretend that there really isn't a large stack of papers on his desk awaiting his signature. Instead, he peers at the little goat in his wife's arms - his son! - and wondered how he got so lucky.
Happy things, however, don't last forever, Asgore reflects bitterly as he stares at the throne in the corner of the room, swathed in a heavy tarp to conceal the former prescence of his queen. He looks to the sea of flowers, remembering Chara and Asriel, the two beings that made him who he was.
A king seeking revenge for those who wronged him by murdering his children.
For those of you wondering when I will post the next chapter of "He Will Be Fine", my beta is currently taking a well-deserved break, so I will not post the next chapter until she gets back to me.
So, this is un-betaed and written in about twenty minutes. I like the bittersweet tone, and I hope you like it too! I like constructive criticism, so if you'd like to give me any advice, please do! :) Thank you for reading!
