A Mother's Love

By: ChoCedric

As she sits in the rocking chair holding baby Neville in her arms, she tries to think about the future, and all she can see is violence and bloodshed. It's Halloween of 1981, and the war's been going on for so long that she doesn't see it ever ending. And it's not fair that her baby, her sweet little boy, will have to grow up in a world like this.

There are many things Alice doesn't understand anymore, one of them being her husband, Frank. She thinks back to their wedding day, when they were both so happy and thought on the same page. But the war has torn their marriage apart. It doesn't seem like there's a day that goes by now that they don't fight, that they don't say hurtful words to one another while they fiercely try to protect their son from a prophecy that predicts he'll have to kill. If he doesn't, then he'll be killed. It's as simple as that, and the thought breaks Alice.

The cause of all of the marital fights is the simple fact that she doesn't want to stay in the country anymore; she just wants to take Neville and get the hell out, leave the fight up to everyone else. Frank's implied that that's selfish and cowardly, because he wants to fight to make the world better for Neville, to bring the bad guys down for Neville. But doesn't he understand? All Alice wants is their safety! Is it really selfish that she doesn't want her little boy to grow up in a world where you can't go a day without someone being killed? Is it really cowardice driving her to want to escape the nightmare this country's turned into?

"I'm sorry, baby," she whispers as she continues to cradle a sleeping Neville close. "I'm so, so sorry. I'm sorry the world's so messed up, I'm sorry your daddy and I aren't getting along, I'm sorry I feel like I'm failing to keep you safe. You are my son, Neville. No son of mine should have to grow up like this. But I'll do everything in my power to fix it for you, sweetie. Mummy won't rest until she knows you'll be all right."

And little does she know that as she is watching him sleep peacefully, something mind-boggling's happening at Godric's Hollow right now; little does she know that the end of the war's just moments away. And she also doesn't know that in only a few days' time, when all finally seemed safe, her whole world would come crashing down, and for the rest of her life, she'll never recognize her beloved son again. All she knows now is that Neville looks so innocent when he sleeps, and until the moment her world ends, she'll do anything to preserve his innocence. Because honestly, that's all she needs.
