and sorry if i don't go canon. i don't watch it at all.
It's a shame to say that he doesn't know.
Does he even love her?
I mean, it's not like she's the only gorgeous woman he knows. There's Gina, Meredith...
Actually, strike that. They're his exes and the awkwardness would be too much. He definitely doesn't want to go through the glares, the questions, the uncertainty of being with someone in front of Kate again.
And there're more reasons - or anti-reasons, come to think about it. She's competitive. She stole his heart, stomped on it and tore it into ten pieces before saying that she loved him.
On the second try, of course.
Sure, it's not her fault. But it's all just a set of coincidences then, isn't it? She coincidentally was about to collapse in the freezer. He coincidentally saw her interrogating that boy through the one-way glass. And, coincidentally, he fell for her. She was a firecracker, wasn't she? And he was always a risk-taker.
And he could even make a list of why he didn't like her!
a. competitive
b. opposite to you
c. guarded too much
d. lied
e. et cetera and forever
The first point: Maybe that was part of her appeal to him. Next.
Second: They do say opposites attract - but as an author he knows that clichés collapse on themselves soon enough.
Third: So, so true. But she had a reason. Her mother died, right? And was murdered. So it was only a natural reflex to begin thinking that everyone she cared for would be killed.
And on that point: it's his life. He could save it by leaving her, he should know.
Fourth: he really doesn't think he's qualified to talk about this.
Last: And maybe.
The list would go on to forever and then some - but she is only human. So is he, in fact. For all he knew, she could be making a list about him right now.
"What're you doing, hon?"
She strides in. He looks up and smiles.
"Nothing. Now, where were we...?"
A night later, in a tangle of sweaty sheets and glistening limbs, he reflects.
Kate might be beautiful, but it's Amy Porter who has his heart.
