AN: This is just an idea, really, but please review.

I was always there. I was always by his side, through bad and good and just plain depressing. I was always there for him, except when I wasn't.

There was that time when I was just a magical teenager, stumbling through life and Arthur only a prat of a lonely prince. Then I met and insulted him- Arthur- and then I saved his life for the first time.

Arthur gave me a purpose, a destiny. He gave me something to hope for, to look forward to. And I gave him a friend. I helped shape Arthur, helped him become something more. I helped him become the king he is now.

I never asked too much in return, never wanted appreciation or acknowledgment for all those years of hard work and service. I was content to help with the formation of Albion, no matter how hard it became to keep my secret and my silence. No matter how much I wanted to tell him, if only to ease his burdens and fears.

Arthur and I were two sides of the same coin, the very same words of Kilgarrah, that was all that mattered to me for the longest time, it was all that I cared about. I protected him and he me. We completed each other, and now, centuries after he is dead and gone, the land of Albion only a child's tale, I still feel the loss of my other half.

For years after he died, I mourned. Albion crumbled from the loss of Arthur and I, the knights perished and my family faded away. I was alone.

Once again I had no purpose. My magic stayed with me and I was indeed the most powerful wizard of all time. I never aged past 22 in looks, but my soul felt the weight of the centuries. I kept it though! I made sure of that. I kept that innocent center, that place deep inside my soul where I was always positive and awkward and a fool.

I kept on being that person whom helped shape Arthur and Albion. I kept that smile, and made sure it reached my eyes. I helped others with my magic, as I had always done, and even though no one knew that I was the Merlin, I was there.

This went on for centuries, no one knowing who I was and what I was capable of, until the day I was visited by an angel and the men who started the Apocalypse.
