Written in the Stars Chapter One (Prologue):

Deirdre Elsabeth Edgecombe

What started out as just a boring day at home, soon turned into the greatest

adventure of my entire life. I was eleven years old the day I got my letter to Hogwarts,

my parents were quite shocked to say the least. I had never shown magical aptitude my

at all, and they had thought me to be a squib. For those out there who do not know

what a 'squib' is, they are people who come from a magical family; however they can

perform as much magic as a muggle with a twig. None. My parents were more than

pleased that this had not turned out to be the case with me. Until I got my letter I was

little more than the piece of lint underneath my parent's bed. My elder sister Marietta

was the apple their eye. Marietta had curly strawberry blond hair that fell into place

almost perfectly, I say almost because she always had one strand sticking out here and

there. She was in Ravenclaw, the so called 'cleverest' house in Hogwarts, and was

friends with the esteemed Cho Chang. My parents could not have been happier. I on the

other hand am quite different from my sister. They named me Deirdre Elsabeth

Edgecombe; dismal name really, but most people call me Elsie. My hair is more wavy

than curly, and a dark shade of mahogany. It is less than perfect; it is only the slightest

bit tamer than Hermione Granger's hair. I had little to no friends my first year in school,

and not only that but I had been sorted into Hufflepuff. Which is the house known for

'where they put the rest'. My parents were less than pleased about that, but I was so

happy I could fly. The dorm was cozy, and though I had no friends, it is near

impossible to find someone other than Zacharias Smith who wasn't friendly. Marietta

topped me in all classes except three. Care of Magical Creatures, Flying, and Defense

Against the Dark Arts are my best classes. Hagrid nearly cried when he saw how well I

got on with the insane creatures he would bring to class. I took pride in those classes;

my sister didn't pay much attention in them. She was too busy talking to Cho about

gossip and what was in 'Witch Weekly'. My first year turned out to be quite exciting with news of Sirius Black, and the dementors everywhere. It wasn't till fourth year that my life turned upside down.
