She never thought it would happen – not like this anyway. After two weeks of ignoring her, he had practically shoved her into the supply closet to make out. Surely it would have been more than just hot, feverish kisses if Alex Karev had not chosen that exact moment to walk in on them. Two days later they had ended up in the on-call room and this time the clothes did come off…
She never planned it or dreamt of it, even though her relationship with Mark was over and she had thrown her wedding ring away into the water while standing on a ferryboat's deck She'd done it in a wave of frustration and partly just because she needed some kind of closure – turn the page.
The next few weeks, their trysts had occurred more often. It wasn't a relationship and they weren't fine just yet, but it felt good. They were okay, they were friends..
He'd come by her new apartment one day, engulfing her in a big hug without saying anything.
"Derek?" she'd questioned, sensing something was wrong.
Then he'd broken down in tears.
She'd held him all night, until his tears had subsided and they'd talked. His mother had died and although Meredith had made it quite clear that Finn was out of the picture for good, he had turned to her, Addison.
And she'd told him the next morning...
"I'm late."
Simple as that, even though she was scared and her voice was trembling.
After that, nothing was the same again.
Thinking back on it now, two months later, she decided that the divorce had made them stronger. No regrets, and she could feel he cared. For instance it was in the way he had tried to hold back his release until she'd come, that night after she'd told him she was pregnant with his baby. He'd failed – of course – coming with a strangled cry as he collapsed on top of her. She hadn't minded. Just the way he'd held her and kissed her had made her immensely happy already. And he'd more than made up for it afterwards.
By morning they were just two naked bodies entangled in the sheets. Naked except for the silver band on her finger. It wasn't a wedding band or an engagement ring, but it held a promise none the less.
"I love you and I'll never hurt you again."
He'd given it to her that morning, speaking those words as tears came to her eyes. And this time, as she felt his arms wrap around her, softly stroking her belly where their baby grew, she was ready to believe him.
