The Only One
(A/N: This is just a little Valenwind drabble I posted on deviantArt, thought I'd share it around.)
Disclaimer: Vincent and Cid belong to Square Enix, and I do not own them. Darn.
Cid liked Vincent Valentine.
They had a…bond, in a way. It wasn't what you could call intimate, or even really a friendship. But Cid could stand on the deck and look out at the world and talk about whatever was going through his mind, and the gunman would stand there and listen.
Cid appreciated it. It was nice that Vincent never argued, never tried to change the subject, never twisted or repeated his words. He just listened, and Cid knew that he took every word in, every harshly-uttered bit of obscenity, every quiet reflection.
Vincent Valentine was certainly one of a kind.
He was usually perfectly silent, maybe nodding from time to time, sometimes the slightest hint of a furrow passing across his brow. On rare occasions however, he interrupted Cid's monologues, and came out with the oddest things.
Such as the time Cid had been on one of his rants about airship repair services.
"And you pay them a fucking fortune, and they can't even fix the damn ship properly! Have to stand over them the whole fucking time, pointing out every damn thing they're doing wrong, and then they charge you, and the ship's still munted! I tell you what, the only one who I can trust with this baby is me."
"You're the only one who makes me smile," Vincent said suddenly.
" – no one even knows a fucking thing abou – wha?"
Cid turned to look at Vincent. There was an odd feeling in his chest.
The gunman met his gaze head on, his face remaining perfectly still. Vincent's black hair whipped around his face and the ragged cloak swirled out behind him like spilt blood.
After a few slightly awkward seconds Vincent turned sharply on his heel and left.
"Fucking weirdo," Cid muttered to himself, unnerved by the swooping sensation in his ribcage.
