Meet Ella. She is an extraordinary girl, in an extraordinary village, who lives in an extraordinary house. Everyone who lives there wears bright, neon clothes and wears lots of makeup, dyes their hair all the colours of the rainbow and loves everything posh and fancy. She was born here... The Capitol. However, Ella has always been... Well, kind of different, I suppose. She hates makeup, and posh clothes, and colourful hair. She hates big houses, and most of all... She hates The Hunger Games. Ella was always different. Why? Well perhaps the clue is in the title.
She looks like a Capitolian, speaks like a Capitolian, and... Well, that's about it. She doesn't THINK like a Capitolian. She thinks like someone from district 3 or maybe 4 or 5 or7or possibly even 2! She, like many people from the outline districts hates the Capitol. She hates them so much that at night, when everyone else is sleeping, she gets up out of her bed and creeps to her wardrobe where she takes all her fancy clothes out and tries on just one item. She tries on her jeans. An almost forbidden item, classed as unfashionable and embarrassing. But not to her. She loves them. They feel lovely, and are a beautiful shade of deep blue. She bought them discreetly, on her visit to district 12 in summer with her dad. Ella only ever wore them once in public, for about five minutes before mum realised she was wearing them. (Mum has a name, it's Prim. But Ella calls her Mum, so that's what I'll call her). She was forced to change into horrible golden and silver three quarter length trousers with a pink t-shirt. She looked a bit like Lady Gaga.
It's Ella's dream to one day rule the Capitol, and perhaps show them that big hats and neon lipstick is not that big a deal. She wants to be able to leave the house, in her jeans, and not be laughed at. Especially by Mums sister, Katniss, who WON THE HUNGER GAMES! Although Ella hates the whole idea of it, she is incredibly proud of her auntie.
One day, Ellawas shopping with her mum... but this time it was different, because underneath her pink and green knitted leggings she was wearing her jeans, and when she went to try on a horrible red and green silk dress, she forgot to put her leggings back on... and ended up wearing her jeans in public. Everyone she passed stopped and stared, but she never noticed until she got home that night... and the next day, everybody was wearing jeans!
