William panted, his body was heavy and rough against Grell's. He had wanted it, and she was there. He had unceremoniously grabbed her by the waist and pulled her to the bed - no feelings involved, just sex.
And, she reflected after they had finished, that was all it ever would be to him. She shifted away, swinging her long legs over the edge of the bed and searching for her clothes.
"You're leaving?" Will asked.
"I'd thought you'd want me to." she replied.
"What would make you think that?"
The redhead sighed. "Will," she looked at him. "We both know I'm just a one-night stand to you." she pulled her shirt on. "This isn't important, it doesn't mean anything."
"And you're settling for that?" the man questioned, propping himself up on one arm.
"It's not settling," she answered flatly. "It's taking what I can get."
It was pathetic and she knew it. She'd come to terms with that years ago. At this point, it was all she could do.
William cocked his head slightly. "You really think you're worth that little to me?" He had never seen her act like this before - no dramatics, just quiet acceptance and passivity. It was so unlike the normally passionate redhead - what had he done to her?
Grell raised a thin, arched brow. "What else have you led me to believe?"
Honestly, William was surprised at that. She constantly threw herself at him, and he made no secret of his distaste for that kind of behaviour. However, for as much as he hated showing it, Will had a growing fondness for his scarlet-haired coworker. He was still figuring it out himself, and didn't want to confuse matters more. He supposed he had been rejecting her more harshly than intended, and he hadn't considered the possibility that all of that had been taking its toll on her.
"I suppose..." he yawned. "I suppose I haven't been exactly tender towards you, have I?"
The scarlet brow raised higher in response to the obvious question.
Yawning again, Will raised one arm to make a space between the blankets for her to get back in. She complied, slipping back into the soft cotton sheets.
The raven-haired reaper pressed against her back, arm wrapped around her. "Better?" he murmured. She nodded slightly. "Please know that you're worth very much to me, Grell."
There was no way of knowing whether or not she had heard him say that, perhaps he could fool himself into believing that her nestling further into his chest was her way of acknowledging his risky statement. Nevertheless, she was quite asleep now.
This was unfamiliar territory, he'd have to dip his toes in the water before jumping in. William didn't even know how she'd react if he had told her his true feelings - she might flat-out reject him out of shock. He'd have to take it slow. For the time being, he'd take what he could get.
