Ian Maxwell looked up from his magazine long enough to watch his father stagger into the small family room, and flop heavily onto the old black leather sofa.
"Welcome home Duo." Hilde called cheerily from the kitchen.
"I...I luve you...too." Duo replied slowly, his words slurred and labored.
"Are you drunk again?" Hilde demanded, now standing next to Duo, hands on hips, giving him the best "Heero Yuy Death Glare" she could.
"Jus...st a...taaaad.," a lopsided grin spreading across his face.
"You are despicable!" She teased, smacking Duo in the back of the head. Duo opened his eyes, but had to shade them against the soft twinkle of the Maxwell family Christmas tree.
"But Babe." *hiccup*
"No buts! It's Christmas Eve, and you're drunk. Talk about family togetherness." She scolded.
"Well, I cooould make us a whooole lot *hiccup* closer."
"No. That's how HE happened!" Hilde exclaimed, pointing to their youngest son, Raymond, as he walked into the room.
"What did I do?" Raymond asked, raising both hands in the air, proclaiming his innocence.
"Nothing Sweetheart. Just arguing with your intoxicated father."
"Oh God. I know what you're talking about. Please leave me out of this. I just came in here to get my Chemistry book. I don't want to be involved in a conversation about your sex life" He exclaimed, continuing his trek across the room, grabbing the book, and retreating back into his room.
"I wouldn't mind the consequences." Duo grinned. Hilde sighed, "You are absolutely impossible sometimes, but I just can't stay mad at you."
"Why? Because I'm too cute?" He asked, now deeply interested in what his wife would say.
"No, because I love you." She replied warmly.
"Good *hiccup* answer. Hey, wait a minute. You don't *hiccup* think I'm cute?" Duo pouted.
"You are very handsome, maybe not as handsome as Zechs, but still very handsome." Hilde teased.
"Come here you", Duo said playfully, "I'm going to have to teach you a lesson for saying that." Duo grabbed Hilde by the waist and pulled her down on top of him.
"I was only kidding." Hilde whispered, resting her head on his muscular chest and running her hands through his thick chestnut brown hair.
Having enough of the love fest taking place on the couch, Ian closed his magazine and stood up. He adjusted his perfectly feathered, shoulder length, midnight black hair for the hundredth time that day and checked his appearance in the mirror. Duo looked up just in time to see his eldest son quickly exiting the room.
"Hilde, the Christmas tree is walking away." Duo pointed out in his stupor.
"That's your son, silly." Hilde said between giggles.
"Oh. My son is a Christmas tree?" Duo asked, now obviously confused.
"Shut up and kiss me, you fool"
"Alr..." Duo was cutoff by Hilde's soft lips against his. He kissed her back passionately, wrapping his arms around her small frame. Their kiss finally broke and Hilde laid her head down once again.
"Merry Christmas Duo." She whispered into his chest.
"Merry Christmas Sweetheart." Duo replied, gazing down at the beautiful and petite form of his sleeping wife. Duo closed his violet eyes and rested his head against the arm of the sofa. He drifted into a deep sleep, where Christmas trees and sugarplum fairies danced in his head.
