Ka'Ren had only ever wanted to be leader, to carry the White Spear, and he had trained hardest of all the young hunters. His only real competition had always been D'Leh, but D'Leh didn't want to be leader; he only wanted Evolet.
Ka'Ren cared nothing for the woman. She would come with the White Spear, but he would only do his duty by the clan, nothing more. Old Mother had explained her vision more than once, enough for every young hunter to understand.
Ka'Ren had longed to ask if something was wrong inside him. What he desired… it could not help the clan in any way. But Old Mother would surely go to Tic'Tic, and Ka'Ren could not chance that.
So he left his questions unasked, shoved his dreams and desires deep inside, and cultivated a rivalry with D'Leh, when what he truly wanted was what D'Leh had with Evolet.
Old Mother sometimes looked at him out the corner of her eye, then at D'Leh. Her lips would curve in an almost-smile. At those moments, he wanted to demand knowledge, to beg her to tell him if he was wrong or not.
But finally the day came, when Tic'Tic would step down for a new leader. It was too late to ask Old Mother, too late to do anything but hunt.
So he would do his best, same as he'd always done, and the Fathers would choose.
