DISCLAIMER Inspired by the line in "Usual Suspects" that Sam and Dean could legally be held for seventy-two hours as well as the idea of The Demon visiting psychics in their dreams. This is a "What if" idea and other than the boys being held for longer than in the actual episode, everything else is the same.
Detective Ballard sighed in exhaustion as she stared at the cell that held Sam and Dean Winchester. They had been here for several hours now. Granted, she and Detective Sheridan could've gone home after their shifts, but the man had been adamant that they stay and watch them. Sam appeared to be sleeping, which was to be expected. But the curious thing was that Dean remained awake. From his straight stance, it was almost as if he was sitting guard over his brother. Suddenly, Sam's brow furrowed. Detective Ballard watched as Dean became alert.
"Sammy?" he asked. Sam moaned and he made motions as if trying to back away from something.
"What the---" Detective Ballard wondered.
"No! NO! You won't use me!" Sam shouted.
"Sammy! Sammy!" Dean exclaimed, positioning himself on top of his brother to stop the thrashing.
"You won't use me! You hear me? No!" Sam shouted.
"Come on, you freak. Get out of his head," Dean growled.
"NO!" Sam cried, jerking awake.
"You all right, little brother?" Dean questioned.
"Oh, man. Dean, it---it was in my head. It---was---was sayin' how it wanted to use me. Wanted to---"
"It's all right, little brother. As long as I'm around, nothin' bad will happen to you," Dean promised. Sam panted and Dean smoothed back the younger boy's hair. Detective Ballard gazed at them in complete amazement. As soon as Dean had said that he wouldn't let anything happen to him, Sam had become calmer. It was as if the young man had complete faith in his brother. But what had he had been talking about? Someone in his head? What kind of baloney was that? And yet, the older man had mentioned the same thing. She shook her head of the thought. However, she couldn't believe the utter trust the younger man had in his older brother. She watched as Dean urged Sam back to sleep. Almost immediately, Sam did as he was told and Dean returned to his previous position. For the first time since the Winchesters had been taken into custody, Detective Ballard wondered if they were doing the right thing by holding them.
