What we lack attracts us. This held true for Enjolras and Grantaire. The believer, and the cynic. They were the obverse of each other. Much in the same way that the sun and the moon are opposites of each other, Enjolras and Grantaire were opposites. Enjolras was the leader of the revolution, bright and strong and harsh in his fury. When he spoke to the people, he didn't just speak. He inspired them to fight for freedom, for equality, for a better day. Enjolras was said to be the marble lover of liberty, with rays of sun caught up in his hair and all the ocean's raging passion in his eyes. His passion for what he believed in was infectious and everyone who heard him was caught up in his fervour.

Grantaire was almost the opposite. Where Enjolras believed so wholly in his cause, Grantaire was cynical, always playing Devil's Advocate. He was dark of hair and dark of eyes, with a quick wit and a certain appetite for wine. He was always ready with a joke or a cocky remark to fill in the silences.

To any outsider, it seemed obvious that Enjolras detested Grantaire, referring to him as 'winecask' and telling him often that he didn't belong at the heart of the revolution if he didn't believe, telling him that he was incapable of believing, of thinking, of willing, of living, and of dying. All Grantaire said in response to that last statement was, "You'll see." To any outsider, it seemed ridiculous that Grantaire could not pick up on how Enjolras didn't want him around.

But that was not true of their friends. They could see that Enjolras, no matter how much he said he despised Grantaire, cared for Grantaire deeply. When strangers said that Grantaire would be doing Les Amis a favour by staying away from the meetings, the people who saw them every week, their friends, said otherwise. They saw how Grantaire gave Enjolras opposing points to work against, how he pointed out flaws in plans so that Enjolras might have been able to improve on them and how Enjolras took all of his points on board, even without realising it. They saw how, behind all the quick wit and cocky remarks, Grantaire adored Enjolras and how, behind all the disparaging comments, Enjolras cared for Grantaire.

Authors' Note: Hello everyone! So this is my first ever fanfiction (yay!) This was an idea I've had floating around the back of my mind for ages now and I finally got my butt into gear and wrote it up. I'm not sure where I am headed with this, or whether I am even going to continue it at all, but we shall see. If you feel like leaving a review, go for it because it would really make my day! But if you don't want to leave a review, that's fine too!

Thank you for reading!
