The air was quiet as the occupants in the hotel slept peacefully. A blonde man climbed the stairs silently, trying not to disturb his comrades from their slumber. He glanced at the door of room number six as he passed it but then he stopped. He turned his head to stare at the closed door, making sure he wasn't just hearing things. He wasn't.
He gently pushed at the door open and poked his head through the door to take a look. Aeris was sitting on the end of her bed, her back facing him as she brushed her hair ready for bed. She was singing gently under her breath as she did so, completely unaware of her company.
"You'll be in my heart, yes you'll be in my heart. From this day on..." she trailed off as she looked up and saw Cloud staring at her in the mirror. She didn't appear to be the least bit embarrassed however as she turned and grinned at him.
"Hello," she greeted, tilting her head to the side. Cloud blushed suddenly aware of being caught staring at her and what she would be thinking.
"I heard you singing," he attempted to explain. She giggled, pushing her hair out of her face.
"I didn't deafen you did I?" she asked. "I think I'm tone deaf," she added at seeing his confused look. He shook his head.
"I think you have a nice voice," he replied distractedly and then, a split second later realisied what he had said. "I mean..."
"Really?" she asked, her eyes bright with happiness. She didn't seem to hear his protest. He trailed off and just shrugged.
"Well, I was just checking that everyone was okay," he said after a moment of silence. Aeris smiled and nodded.
"Okay bodyguard," she answered with a wink, giggling as Cloud blushed lightly and muttered a goodnight. Aeris waited until he closed the door behind him before she lay in her bed, humming the lullaby to herself to try and get her to fall asleep.
Cloud's words echoing around her head didn't help though. The warm fuzzy feeling caused by such thoughts was rather distracting.
