"Bedtime, Sakura."
The dark-haired girl snored lightly.
The voice that had called her chuckled softly. "Good night."
She waved a leg in the air as her father shut the door, gripping her pillow tightly.
A few seconds after the door shut, a rather strange-looking toy slumped against the wall. "That was close."
The girl mumbled.
The plush turned its furry head to Sakura and blinked. "Oh.. err.. good night..?" He flew down from his perch and cuddled up in a blanket left on the floor.
What seemed like a few hours later, a long card drifted out from between the gap of the half-open drawer and hovered over the young girl's bed, fading into a strange-looking woman. Fire surrounded her, lighting up the room with a pale orange glow. Soon after, three other cards followed and transformed into a bird-like woman, a mermaid, and what looked like an old woman with a bad hair day. Snickersnickercough.
The winged woman spoke softly, still cutting through the silence. "It has been a while, ne?"
The mermaid nodded softly, and the woman surrounded by fire bowed her head. "She hasn't used her magic in quite a while. I'm worried her star might be dying."
The old woman turned her head to the fire. "Yes, a star can only stand so long without the use of a magic user.."
The mermaid's eyes glazed over, staring at the girl blankly. "A test should be arranged. What do you think, Windy?"
Windy paused. "Yes, that should be a good idea. Firey? Earthy?"
Firey nodded again. "One test for each card. Using only her own magic, she must capture it."
"She keeps the cards whose tests she passes, and loses those whose tests she fails."
Watery turned to Earthy. "You're a genius."
"Why yes, I know."
"Even though you look like an old woman."
"Shut your trap."
"Yes grandma."
Earthy glared at Watery, and faded into a ball of green light. Windy, Watery, and Firey glanced at each other, then faded into swirling orbs of colour also. Streams of light issued from each orb at Sakura's forehead, forcing her into a dreamland where her magic would be tested.. for god knows how long.
