I came up with this idea last night and was writing it within five minutes. I usually take about a week to ruminate over an idea before writing it, so forgive any quality issues you may find with this.
This is based on chapter 45; not sure of the episode number. And yes, the title is meant to sound like "Parent Trap" but has absolutely nothing to do with it at all. I just like the sound of it. That said, please read and enjoy.

L cast a glance with wide, surreptitious black eyes at the boy standing beside him. "If I am to die…would you take over the role of L for me?"
Light froze, his eyes widening momentarily before he pieced it all together in his head. He heaved a disappointed sigh. The rest of the investigation team looked surprised. "Honestly, L, I'm hurt that you have so little faith in me."
L quirked an eyebrow at the boy's response. The others also looked questioning.
"May I explain to the rest of the team what you're thinking?"
L nodded, interested in hearing what the teen might say.
"You do not really mean to offer me your position, since you still suspect me of being Kira. However, you know that L is Kira's greatest enemy and the only thing standing in the way of his goals. You know that Kira would jump at the chance to have L's position, thereby eliminating all opposition while simultaneously diverting the investigation away from himself. You hoped that I would accept your offer eagerly, thereby increasing your percentage of my being Kira. Really, I'm almost offended that you think so little of me."
Light explained his reasoning in a straight-forward, almost bored tone. The rest of the investigation team gasped in surprise. Soichiro and Matsuda had enough loyalty to Light to be offended on the boy's part, and were about to say something nasty to L.
L, himself, only looked wide-eyed at hearing Light's reasoning. "I admit that I'm quite impressed with Light-kun's reasoning abilities…"
Light smirked to himself. 'That's right, L. I see right past your little trap. It won't be quite so easy to frame—'
"…However, that is not what I was thinking at all," L continued, surprising the other. "I really meant to offer him my position after I am dead. However…Light-kun seems very good at getting inside Kira's head and seeing Kira's reasoning. Light-kun also seems to be very paranoid and defensive about something. I wonder what it could be?"
Light's eyes widened and he mentally face-palmed before glaring at L, who couldn't hide a smirk. The rest of the investigation team only looked at each other in confusion. What just happened…?
L made a V with his pointer and middle fingers, pointing it at his own eyes before swiftly flicking it over to Light. He repeated this action several times, mouthing, 'I'll be watching you.'
Light wondered if maybe banging his head on his desk would be too incriminating.
