Skip Day
It was another fine spring day in the Seireitei. April had been an intense month so far for the students of the Shinigami Academy. Reports were being written, field training was being conducted, kidou chants were being memorized, and the advanced students were becoming weary with the monotony. Two of these such students were Kyoraku and Ukitake.
They were sitting in the kidou classroom on this warm afternoon, trying to memorize the chant for kidou #66. Beside the textbooks was a notebook on which they were passing notes, commenting on their sword training exercise from earlier that day. At last the period ended and classes were over for the day.
"Man, that chant was not sinking in," Kyoraku said with a sigh as they walked to dinner.
"Probably because you slept through half of it," Ukitake said in reply. Kyoraku shrugged and Ukitake rolled his eyes. Following dinner they were forced to head to the library to finish their immense work load. It was not until one in the morning that they returned to the dormitory. This had been routine through out the past few weeks.
The alarm went off all too early for their liking the next morning. "What a pain," Kyoraku said. "I'm not in the mood for class this morning." It was Friday morning and every Friday they had class on pointless things they already knew how to do, such as give briefings on field training sessions.
"You know," Ukitake said as he sat up on one arm, "I don't feel like going either. I don't feel that great. I'd like to go back to bed for at least another hour."
"Well, you not wanting to go to class, this is certainly rare, Ukitake," Kyoraku said with a smirk. "I think we need to honor this occasion."
"Agreed," said Ukitake but then he began to cough.
"See, go back to bed," Kyoraku said. "You're ill. And I was worried about you, so I had to stay here to make sure you were OK." He laid back down.
"That sounds good to me," Ukitake said, also lying back down and falling asleep once again.
Having slept in late, they were feeling much better and went to their afternoon lessons with renewed energy. When they arrived, Yamamoto-sensei inquired about their absence that morning. "Well, Yama-ji, Ukitake was ill again, and I had to stay behind to make sure he was OK," Kyoraku said without hesitation.
"Are you feeling better now, Jushirou?" Yamamoto asked, turning to Ukitake.
"Yes, sensei, I am feeling a lot better now. I just needed some extra sleep, I think," Ukitake replied.
"Glad to hear it, please take your seats," Yamamoto said to them. Once they had turned from Yamamoto, Kyoraku and Ukitake exchanged small smirks. They sat down and noticed that Yamamoto was berating another student for having missed class.
"You didn't yell at them," the student exclaimed, pointing towards Kyoraku and Ukitake.
"They are fine students who hardly miss class, and one of them is ill. You, on the other hand, missed three classes last week. Stay after class so we can work this out, now sit down."
Right before the lecture began, Kyoraku scribbled a note to Ukitake that said, 'Maybe we should try this more often.'
'OK, but not for another week or so,' Ukitake wrote back. Who knew playing hooky could feel so good?
