They didn't know...

Arthur loved Merlin.
Merlin loved Arthur.

But they never admitted it to each other, although everybody in Camelot knew about their hidden love.
Everybody in Camelot could see it whenever they were seen together.

But they didn't know…

Every morning when Merlin woke Arthur, he hoped Arthur would look at him without shouting at him.
Every morning when Arthur was woken by Merlin, he hoped Merlin would do it in a slightly other way.

Every time when Merlin helped Arthur out of his armor and his clothes, he wished Arthur would know the light touches of his hands and Arthur's skin weren't just by accident.
Every time when Arthur was helped out of his amor and clothes by Merlin, he wished Merlin would do it because of another reason.

Arthur didn't know that Merlin wore his neckerchief to hide his fast heart beat which was very visible through the veins along his neck when he was around Arthur.
Merlin didn't know that his neckerchief was the reason Arthur's heart beat went fast as well whenever he looked at Merlin.

Merlin didn't know that Arthur wanted him to be safe when he left him alone back in Camelot to fight in a battle with his knights.
Arthur didn't know that Merlin was so worried about him when he was away in a battle without him, Merlin could not sleep.

Merlin did not know that Arthur secretly held his hand when he was poisoned by Nimueh when he was almost dead.
Arthur did not know that Merlin sent him the blue shining bubble to safe his life, mumbling Arthur's name while he fought against the poison in his body.

Merlin didn't know that Arthur really wasn't happy when he was with Gwen.
Arthur didn't know how bad Merlin felt when he had to see Arthur and Gwen apparently happy together.

They did not know that they loved each other.
But Merlin knew that Arthur would die for him.
And so would he for Arthur and he knew that Arthur knew too.
