A/N: Dear readers,
So this is my first attempt at a MacGyver (2016) fic. I'm really uncertain about this; if I stayed in character, if it's plausible, if it's alright, if I should continue… So, I welcome your feedback. It's unbeta'd, all mistakes are mine.
Anyways, thank you for reading. I hope you enjoy.
Cheers,
Biensche

Summary: MacGyver defuses a bomb. Piece of cake, right!?
Piece of Cake!
A young blonde man sat crouched down at a corner of a building carefully poking his head around looking up and down the street. Though it was close to 6 pm the streets around him were deserted. No cars were driving around, no people in suits and ties were hurrying along the sidewalk towards their cars parked up and down the street, no couples taking a walk around to the close by park, no kids jumping around their parents, there simply wasn't anyone here. It was completely empty and silent. Not even the birds dared to chirp or even fly from one tree to another. It seemed as if he was the only living being around. It was just like as he had anticipated.
After the anonymous call to the police telling the dispatcher about a bomb that was attached to a car parked at the side of the road which looked weird a patrol car had stopped by. Two officers had exited and walked around some cars and confirmed the caller's information. One officer had lain down and eventually detected the small, dark package taped to the underside of the limousine.
That's when the tumult had started. As fast as possible the police had gathered around and had begun to evacuate every single building as well as the streets in the radius of at least one block.
That had been 15 minutes ago. Now only he was left sitting on his haunches, staring down the empty, silent road. In the distance he could make out the flashing lights of several police cars blocking the way. A small smile tugged at the corners of the blonde's mouth.
"I don't like this." A male voice said.
"He's done this before." A firm female voice replied.
"You of all people should know he's capable of doing this", another female voice spoke up.
"Piece of cake." Yet another male voice said.
"Yeah, I know, still-"
"Will you please just shut up? I have a job to do." The blonde man replied as he listened to the conversation he could hear over his earpiece.
"Sorry, buddy."
oooOOOooo
"I really don't like this." Jack Dalton said as he folded his arms in front of his chest and stared intently on the big screen in front of him.
"Jack, he's done this before a zillion times", Matilda "Matty" Webber replied in her usual stern voice.
"You of all people should know he's capable of doing this." Riley Davis' annoyed voice cut in.
"Hey, he's Mac!" Wilt Bozer called as he threw up his arms to support his statement. "Piece of cake!"
"Yeah, but still-"
"You're being overprotective, Jack." Riley interrupted Jack who shot her a dark look but turned his attention quickly back to the monitor.
"Guys, I can hear you!"
A short pause ensued while everyone remained silent.
"Mac, how's it looking over there?" Jack finally asked trying to ignore the others in the room with him but instead focusing solely on the lonesome man who was to be seen on the big screen in the room.
"The streets are empty." MacGyver replied matter-of-factly as he slowly walked the sidewalk. Every now and again he turned his head to see if he really was alone as he hoped. He couldn't and wouldn't dare to disarm a bomb attached to a car with a whole lot of people around if that could be avoided. Especially as he didn't know what this was all about, what he was dealing with, what he was about to find. But at least he had all the tools he needed with him. He even was clothed in a special protective suit which made it difficult to move and talk but which hopefully would protect him as best as possible.
"Do you really have to do this alone?" Jack asked.
"You want to be here?"
"Nah, not really. But I don't like you being there on your own."
"I have you guys," MacGyver countered.
"Right here in your head." Jack replied grinning broadly.
"Ugh. That'd be awkward." The dark haired computer specialist pulled a face as she sat crossed legged on the floor with a computer on her lap.
"I agree, Riley." MacGyver said.
"Could we please focus on the task at hand?" Even though it was a question, it was clear to everyone this was not debatable nor would Matty accept any further interference.
The silence became almost palpable and uncomfortable to bear for everyone but Matty and MacGyver.
"Shouldn't we send in a bomb squad or something?" Jack turned around to face Matty.
"We've had this discussion before, Jack. We were the closest and fastest to get there. There's no time for sending in another team." The woman replied.
"Team? What team?" Jack asked incredulously. "He's all alone out there." He pointed at the screen but his eyes were glaring at the small woman.
"We have his back from here", Matty said. Despite her small height her glare intimidated even a Jack Dalton though he would never let that on but quickly turned his back on her to not let her see his face. Yet he knew Matty knew. They all knew were his anger came from: His worry for MacGyver.
Jack cleared his throat to shake the thoughts about Matty from his head. He watched his young partner and friend on the monitor. MacGyver had reached the car which he circled slowly and cautiously.
"What do you see, Mac?" Jack asked when he saw MacGyver approach and inspect the car.
MacGyver had just looked inside the car where he couldn't see anything that resembled a bomb. "So far nothing. All clear."
"Didn't they say it was underneath the car?" Jack asked irritated by MacGyver's inspection of the outside and interior of the car.
"Yes. But better be safe than sorry."
Jack almost could see the wink in MacGyver's words. "Right. You should check out everything." Out of habit, Jack nodded in agreement forgetting that his partner couldn't see him.
MacGyver knelt down and bent his head to get a good look underneath the car. He spotted the bomb right away and breathed in audibly.
"What is it?" Jack asked upon hearing the heavy breath.
"I can't get to it like this." MacGyver stood back up and began unzipping his protective suit.
Riley stared wide-eyed, her eyes darting in between the big screens and the one right in front of her. "Whoa, whoa!" Bozer exclaimed.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?" Jack yelled.
"Blondie, you get that suit back on! Right now." Matty ordered.
The three shouts came at the same time and MacGyver had a hard time making out what they were saying but he could kind of imagine what it was.
"I can't crawl underneath the car with the suit on."
"Then you will have to back away." Matty replied.
"No way. I can't just leave it like this. Who knows when it will go off? It needs to be disarmed. We can't wait!" The young man stripped out of the protective suit.
"Mac, no, get that thing back on!"
But MacGyver didn't listen. He could hear some chattering over his earpiece but he tuned the voices out and concentrated on the task at hand.
Kneeling back down the young man shone a flashlight to get a closer look at what he was dealing with. Carefully he slid under the car and wiggled closer to the small package. He shone his light on it and slowly let the light shine around. The bomb was attached to the car alright.
Carefully the young explosives expert went to work. Slowly he palpated the plastic container trying to gain access to the actual bomb. The lid was secured with two screws which he took out to then set the lid aside. He found a timer and frowned. It read 17:54, 17:53, 17:52 and ticking.
"Wow. That's quite some time left", MacGyver muttered. Yet, he didn't want to lie underneath a car much less a bomb for another 17 minutes and risk this thing to explode.
A small cable led away from the digital display to the detonator and charges which MacGyver made out as C4.
He furrowed his brows and began thinking:
The police said the caller had said it looked weird. But what should be weird about this? It was a rather simple bomb. And how could the caller have known about it anyway? The bomb wasn't visible from anywhere. It was strapped underneath the car in a place which couldn't be seen unless one laid down and took a close look knowing what they were looking for. This wasn't right. Something felt wrong.
Still, it needed to be defused.
Shining his light around again the man made sure it was only this one bomb and only this one cable leading from the timer to the explosive and the detonator.
"Alright, here goes." MacGyver mumbled as he set his knife against the cable.
Jack, Bozer, Matty and Riley had heard MacGyver's talking and muttering ever since he had disappeared underneath the car. They all were sure he hadn't even realized he had been talking aloud and for them to hear. They also had seen some of what had been happening underneath the car thanks to a small camera attached to MacGyver's clothing. Now the four of them saw the wire between MacGyvers fingers and the knife in his other hand.
No one dared to say anything.
Then MacGyver cut through the wire.
oooOOOooo
Silence.
All around him was silence.
At least that's what it seemed like.
Time seemed to stand still.
MacGyver chuckled at the thought.
Hopefully it did!
He looked up at the bomb. The timer read 15:44.
He exhaled and looked at the cut wire in his hand and the explosive. For a moment he closed his eyes. When he opened them again, the timer read 15:44.
It stood still. Time stood still.
He had defused the bomb. It was harmless now. Well, as harmless as C4 could get. The explosives still needed to be taken off the car and put away in a secure place and the bomb planter had to be found and tried and put away but one step after another.
"It's done." MacGyver exhale came close to sighing.
"Well done."
"Awesome, Mac!"
"Great, man."
"Good job, Blondie."
The voices of his friends mixed-up but the young man could hear the relief in their voices as well as some clapping hands.
"Now get yourself and that bomb out from under that car." Matty ordered. "I have a team waiting for this bomb to be examined."
MacGyver did as he was told. After he got the bomb freed from the car he cautiously placed it on the ground. Ever so slowly he wiggled himself out from under the car. He wasn't afraid of close and tight spaces but he preferred more space over his head. Warily he pulled the bomb from underneath the car and secured the lid back onto the container before he stowed away the plastic package into a bombproof box.
"I knew you could do it!" Jack called and clapped his hands.
"Yeah, right, Jack." Riley replied and rolled her eyes in playful annoyance.
"What? Of course I knew it. I've got faith in this kid!" Jack retorted.
But MacGyver had heard Jack's recognition and knew his friend was serious about this. "Thanks, Jack."
"Man, at least I can breathe again." Bozer said and pulled in a lung full of air.
MacGyver chuckled and answered, "I'm glad to hear you can breathe again."
"Didn't I say it? 'Piece of cake'!" Bozer grinned as he looked around hoping to get some approval but everyone was focussed on the monitor.
After having gathered the tools from his kit MacGyver stood back up. He straightened himself feeling the tension and the kinks in his body from his uncomfortable position from a few minutes earlier. He tilted his head from side to side and rose his arms above his head to work out the tensed muscles and knots he could feel all over his back.
A deafening boom shattered the street.
