Notes: 7:35-8:22 (I am not about to count...^^;;) The original colors I wanted to play with were black and red but it was turning out too long (not to mention a mess of images) and when I started writing, the colors just went away and threatened not to come back. So I wasn't really sure this would meet the challenge. In the end, something fell into place but there's a nagging feeling that it still didn't meet the requirements. =__=;;
This is an answer to the challenge of writing a fic in less than 90 minutes with the theme of complementary colors in the LJ community = http://www.livejournal.com/community/temps_mort/
===========================================
He was on top of the tallest tree in the forest and it felt nice. He hadn't climbed anything remarkably high ever since they left the village. He had hoped that he would reach this top before the sun went down but he was just halfway up by sunset.
There was a time when he would climb atop the mountain monument that held the carved faces of each Hokage, sit on the first Hokage's head and look down on the leaf village. Often, it would be at sun down and he would watch the last trace of light fade into darkness at the end of the day.
Every night, people would return to their own houses and do about their businesses. Children would return home for dinner or curfew. The streets would be empty and the bustling noise of the day's activities would die down in a hushed silence.
Every day there was someone to annoy. He was loud and obnoxious on purpose. He could get attention and people would run after him in anger and annoyance. He felt alive. He could feel the adrenaline rush in all that running away and pranks. His heart would thump faster and pump blood all over his body to support his movements.
And all that would die every night, every time the sun would set. The wind chilled his bones even if he wasn't cold. The silence, unbearable that he would rather be deaf. There was nothing in his house and nothing to go home to. He didn't have anybody to get mad at him if he came home late. So he would stay on top of the monument and wait for a touch of amber to grace the black horizon before going home. No wonder he would always sleep in class.
"Shall we go back?"
He was tired from climbing the top of this tree with just his chakra and was enjoying the view, as well as celebrating the fact that he reached this high, that he had forgotten all about Sasuke. The other boy was on the other tree, just as ragged as him but not as tired, he bet.
"Yeah!"
They both jumped down with Sasuke landing on both his feet and Naruto in an ungraceful hump of limbs. Something warm grabbed his arm which he later discovered was Sasuke's hand, pulling him up and slinging his arm over a shoulder.
"Idiot."
Naruto stared at Sasuke for awhile but didn't argue. He was too tired to even rant. What he noticed though, was the moon that reflected from Sasuke's dark eyes. Something he hadn't noticed while on top of the tree because he was facing the other way where the sun had set. It may not be as striking as the golden glow that made the day so warm, but neither was it the black that made the night so cold.
"I reached the top. Heh!"
The moon stood like a glowing jewel that would guide them back to the village.
"You're still an idiot." And a smirk.
The night wasn't so dark after all.
