AN: I wrote this for Forthright's Songfic challenge. It's a little strange but, ah, such am I. If you're from LJ, post a review here and let me know! My name on LJ is MrsVC. Look me up.

Kagome was quiet. Too quiet. And things like that usually set little red flags flying off in his mind. He watched as she simply sat there, silent. His eyebrows knit together. Something was wrong.

Sometimes I don't know

just what to say

Whatever could be bothering her? She was the emotional wonder. Nothing seemed to faze Kagome. Endless fighting and wandering in a time not her own. Balancing two lives. The world slicked off Kagome like water off a duck's back. What could be daunting Kagome? He was going to find out.

and here in your arms

I just melt away

He sat beside her. She wasn't watching the fire. She wasn't watching Shippo. She was just looking away. Far away and he didn't like that.

"What's the matter, Kagome-sama?"

"Oh, Miroku." She was sad. He could hear it in her voice. She tried to piece together her carefree smile but it wasn't working. "I was just on my way to bath. No peeking, Miroku!" she said as playfully as she could muster. She left. He followed.

fragile whispers

drift off in the wind

"I said 'no peeking'!" Kagome said, not turning around. Miroku could hear her tears.

"Tell me what's bothering you."

"Nothing! I'm fine!" Her voice cracked.

"Yeah, you're fine." Sarcasm.

"Would I lie?"

"No. But you would fib to make me feel better."

"Just leave me alone."

and cross my fingers

wish this moment would never end

"It's him, isn't it?"

"It doesn't matter."

"Because everything is fine."

"Right. Everything is fine."

and my heart's a tongue-tied mess

that Shakespeare could not express

my soul's unspoken cry

"I know he's with her."

"Is that so, Kagome-sama?" He stepped closer. She wouldn't look at him.

"He's always with her."

"Why isn't he with you?"

"Why aren't you with Sango?"

"'Cause I have to be here for you."

"I didn't ask for you to come here."

"I didn't need to be asked." Closer.

I gaze so intently

I'm holding my breath

"Just leave. She needs you."

"She doesn't need me. I'm the needy one."

"Just go. I don't need you."

"I need you." Closer.

your rhythmic heartbeat

rest your head upon my chest

"Why would you say that?"

"Because it is true." He was holding her.

"Don't toy with me."

"Why ever would I?"

"For your own perverted ways!" She tried to smack him away.

I savour sweet flavours I've never known before

a rushing river of feelings that I adore

"I'll go."

"Why?" Desperation.

"You don't need me."

"What if I do?"

The world spins around us as time slips away

"You don't."

"It was a lie."

"This is a lie." Anger.

I dread the sunrise

cause I just want to stay

"Do you hate him?"

"No. Do you hate me?" Sincerity.

"No."

I bring you in close to me

as if tonight were our last

"He'll come back."

"He always does." Exasperation.

"She'll need you."

"Maybe one day." Unbelief.

"Kagome-sama, I-"

"Good night, Mirkou-sama. Maybe someday, I'll need you too."

I struggle for the words

but the moments already passed

The night was dark, like velvet. The stars were out, like sequins. Tears are like diamonds, skin is like porcelain.

Need is like fire.

Consuming.

Love is like wind.

Fleeting.

"Good night."

and my heart's a tongue-tied mess

that Shakespeare could not express

my soul's unspoken cry

AN: So, I'm a little worried that no one will like this so if you did, drop me a line. This is also posted on my LJ journal if you want to leave a note there. Love from MrsVC.
