There are tears falling down Elena's face and all he wants to do is wipe them away; but when he moves closer to her, she flinches like she's afraid of him-and somehow, it is then that the numbness surrounding his heart and mind starts to wear away-and he gasps from physical pain as the horrors he's committed fully sink in.

Elena doesn't even react, her expression having moved from fright to cold indifference faster than he thought possible for a human, and after another moment of silence, she turns away from him and starts walking.

"You once told me you still had hope," he whispers; clinging to the possibility that it isn't over, that he hasn't lost everything-he doesn't hear her answer because he never asked a question, but that she turns around one last time is all he needs to know.
