Title: The Voice I hadn't heard for 8 years
Rating: K
Disclaimer: I don't own LOST or any of its characters.
Author's Note: The Constant (Season 4, Episode 5) still remains my favourite Lost episode of all time. The last scene was the best scene in Lost history, I think. This oneshot is of Penny looking back on it. It's just a drabble, nothing really happens but I really needed to write it out, I just love it so much! I've watched it so many times that I can remember all their speech throughout. :P Please read and tell me what you think at the end by reviewing, it's greatly appreciated! Oh, and for this fanfic, listen to the piano tune "The Promise - Secret Garden". It goes really well with it.
The voice I hadn't heard for 8 years
Flashback
"I know this doesn't make any sense, because it doesn't make any sense to me. But...eight years from now...I need to call you, and I can't call you if I don't have your number." "What?"
"Look, Penny, just give me your number, and- and I know I've ruined things, and I know you think things are over between us, but they're not. If there's any part of you that still believes in us, just give me your number."
"And what's to say you won't call me tonight, or tomorrow?"
"I won't call for eight years. December 24, 2004. Christmas eve… I promise. Please, Pen."
End of Flashback
24th December 2004. Christmas Day. It wouldn't mean a lot to many people but it does to me. Eight years ago it didn't mean anything to me either until I got the phone call- no, not just any phone call- the phone call that I've been waiting to hear. The voice that I hadn't heard for what seemed like a century.
I'd been expecting it for so long yet it wasn't since three years ago when I actually knew why he needed my phone number so much the last time he came to visit. If I knew the reasons then I would have made that moment so worthwhile.
And there it was, just as he promised. I didn't think that he would remember. I didn't think that he would still care. The feeling was indescribable. It's that moment which made it so special. The phone call didn't last that long at all. Now that I finally look back on it, I remember it lasting no more than a minute. That minute was enough, though. It was enough for me to know that he still remembered and that I wasn't going crazy, that I could still carry on searching for him. Because after all, that's the only thing that I've been doing for the past three years… because he's worth it.
I don't ever remember feeling so happy about a phone call. Yet as the phone rang, I knew it was him. It's that instinct feeling that you get when you've been longing for someone for so long. With a shaky hand, I picked up the phone.
"Hello?" I said, hoping to hear that voice.
"…Penny?" It was him. Finally, it was him!
"Desmond?!" I asked, just making sure I wasn't going crazy. For eight years I hadn't heard of him, and now it finally felt like I was in heaven.
The rest of the phone call was just a blur. But these things always are. The most important part though was hearing him. Hearing the voice I hadn't heard for 8 years.
"I don't know where I am, but…"
"…I'll find you, Des…"
"…I promise…"
"…No matter what…"
"…I'll come back to you…"
"…I won't give up…"
"I promise. I love you."
