Writer's Note: This was another one of my prompts, but it was much longer than most of them. I'm not sure what prompted me to write it, I just felt like it. And yes, there is an original character in this story. I know some people HATE that, so if you're one of those, I advise you to STOP RIGHT HERE. Still with me? Good. I hope you enjoy it. :)
Oh and a note. That Vejita is who becomes King Vejita... Not the Prince of all Saiyans. I spell his name different (Vejita for the Sire and Vegeta for the Prince) to as to avoid confusion.
I don't own Dragon Ball Z and do not want to own Dragon Ball Z. This is just a work of fanfiction. I DO own Amaranth and Cassava, however.

Nights on Planet Plant were almost always dark. Amaranth, the small boy of five years old with black hair and black eyes, was therefore used to it. But that didn't stop him from wondering why it was so. He asked his elder brother, Vejita, but he wasn't of much help.
"Aw, baby afraid of the dark?" Vejita, now a big bad boy of seven years old, sneered. He was always a bit hard on his half brother. They didn't share the same mother, but their father, Cassava, always tried to instill in his sons that family was the most important thing one could have. Still, Vejita was a little boy and was a little less mature than his brother, though he was older.
"Of course I'm not." Amaranth stated, squatting near the ground and drawing in the dirt with a stick. "It's always dark. It's the unknown that we have to fear, right? I just wondered why it's always dark."
"Always is a strong word, my son." Cassava, leader of their tribe, walked up to his two young sons. Like Amaranth, he had black hair and black eyes. Vejita, however, had his mother's brown hair. All Saiyans had black eyes. "Actually, there's a full moon once every eight years, my son. On those nights, it's not dark at all."
"Father..." Amaranth instantly bowed to his father as his brother stood idly by, looking bored. "Oh yeah, isn't it the full moon that makes us transform?" He unwrapped his tail from around his waist, almost as if trying to punctuate the point.
"Correct, my son." Cassava said and patted at Amaranth's messy hair. "Wrap that tail back around your waist. It wouldn't do to rely on it for balance, just incase something happens to it."
"Gosh dad, I won't let anyone grab it or rip it off, honest!" Amaranth promised.
"There's no such thing as a sure deal." Cassava reminded his youngest child. "Don't wander too far from camp. You'll miss dinner, and I won't let your mother save you any this time."
"Alright, dad." Both boys stated.
Once Cassava left, Vejita let out a little grunt. "He means your mother."
"Uhm... Vejita..." Amaranth looked up to his brother. "Do you... not like me?"
"Hmm... You are a bit annoying."
"Am I really?" The little boy's face fell at that.
"Hey look. Just annoying like a little brother, right?"
"My mom really loves you, you know. She told me herself." Amaranth told his brother.
"...Really?" Vejita looked at the darkening sky and sighed. "You think dad loves her more than my mom?"
"Uh. Well, I don't think that's possible." Amaranth said.
"Why do you say that?"
"Well..." The five year old faltered and fell silent, but his sibling waited with patience. "It's not fair, your mom dying when you were really little, I think. But I don't think dad replaced her... But like, did he really wanna be alone? Plus, like, she takes care of us cause dad's kinda busy."
Vejita turned his back to his brother and kicked a rock, watching it sail through the air in the quickly fading light. "Right. Let's get back, it's almost dark."
"Right." Amaranth said with a smile. "Plus, there's food!"
