"Kaylee!" Dr. Simon Tam ran through the twists and turns of Serenity to the engine room. "Kaylee!"
The ship's mechanic popped up from behind heavy machinary."Right here!"
Breathlessly, Simon strided through the doorway gesturing over his shoulder, "The Captain says you're going on the job with them?"
Sensing her husband's anxiety Kaylee put her hands on his shoulders. "It ain't no job, Simon, we're just picking up supplies. Serenity here needs a few new parts, is all."
"I - I don't think you should go with them," He held her at arm's length and stared into her eyes.
Sensibly, Kaylee stood her ground, "Well now how're we supposed to pick up supplies for the ship if I don't go?"
Lost for a moment, Simon regained his indignation and stated, "The Captain and Jayne are more than cabable of picking up the things that you tell them too."
Kaylee rolled her eyes, "But, I need to be there to inspect the goods. If we let Mal an' Jayne check the parts we'll be landlocked for days."
He gazed at her, pleading, "I just don't think it's a good idea"
"I'll be alright," She assured him and curled into his arms, "Ain't nothin' can happen to me picking up parts"
"No, Lots of things can happen to you!" He shouted leaving her embrace to pace the room, "Nothing ever goes smooth out on the border planets and certainly not with the Captain's way of running things!" Simon pointed back to the doorway where, sure enough, the man in question was.
"Oh now, this here is touching but if you don't mind, I need to borrow the missus for just a little while, get my ship back to the order it's accustomed," Mal looked over at his mechanic and waved her toward the door, "We'll be back plenty soon, Doctor"
Kaylee moved foward, "Really, Simon, I'll be fine. I'll be back before--"
"No! No, no, no." Simon shook his head, blocking Kaylee's exit, "I'm her physican, and I won't allow it-"
Kaylee gaped at him and tried to shush him, "Simon!"
He continued over her protest, "Not in her condition!" Kaylee winced.
"Her condition? And what might that be mei mei? You got an illness you ain't disclosed to me and the rest of the crew?" Mal looked her over with an eye of curiousity and concern.
Kaylee stared intently at her belly button, blushing. "Ain't no condition, sir"
Not getting the hint, Simon barreled on. "She is just over two months pregnant and I will not--" He broke off just as Kaylee's head snapped up and her jaw dropped. His face flushed, he looked down and shuffled his feet.
Mal grinned, "Da-shiong bao-jah-shr duh la doo-tze, that true?"
Simon nodded with a small smile, "I-I'm...I'm sorry that's not quite the way we had planned on telling you," he stammered.
Turning to leave the room, Mal spoke, "Well, sounds like Kaylee hasta come now."
Simon rushed to to the door and gripped Mal's arm, "Didn't you just hear what I said? She can't go into town, I will not run the risk of anything happening to her!"
Mal plucked the doctor's hand off of his forearm, "Then you'll just haveta come along to protect her, now won't you? 'Sides we got a lot more things to pick up in town now. Get the parts, some nice food, maybe a present or two, come back, Inara'll cook us a fancy dinner and you can tell the rest of the crew you're news all proper-like. How's that sound?"
Smiling broadly Kaylee took Simon's hand, "Shiny, Cap'n"
Mal nodded, "Now, you both get ready to go, we'll be settin' down in just a few minutes," And with that the Captain turned and left the couple to revel in their bliss.
