It hurt. Her arms still ached from time to time. The skin was mottled in patches, discolored. She could still feel the blows. One after the other, the right after the left, he never held his punches and he never held his liquor. At some point in her life she couldn't remember if her name was this curse word or that one. She just knew that the nightmare was never ending following her even to a place she had once considered sacred.
They always stared at her. The children at school. They always whispered and stared. Always. They always talked to her as if they were walking on eggshells or as if they were throwing eggs. Always. The marks on her arms and legs, they felt like targets of shame. It was always her fault, and her mother and brother just stood by, fear in their shaking bodies, and let it all happen. Worst of all were their eyes. The teachers, students, and other families. All their eyes. Critical, pitying, shaming, cruel eyes. But that was six years ago, and this was now.
"Mam, my coffee," a young man sat at the counter of the corner café waiting to be served.
"Just one moment sir," her voice was pitched slightly higher from suddenly remembering all those past memories. Taking a deep breath she turned. Day by day, that's how she would get by.
