A quick, sad, song fic between Shepard and Kaidan. This song seemingly fits parts of their relationship. This is my first song fic, instead of replying to lyrics, I created a story from the song itself. It's quite short as the song itself is are love.
"How to Save a Life"- The Fray. Lyrics © them, Shepard/Kaidan ©BioWare, I just play with them.
Step one: Shepard needed to talk to him alone. She walked nervously toward his posting and spoke quietly to him. "Kaidan, we need to talk." Shepard said. Taking note of his stiff walk, she smiled and put her arm on his shoulder. "Sit down, it's just a talk." She said, motioning him into her quarters.
Kaidan smiled politely back at Shepard as she stared seemingly right through him. Ever since Horizon things has progressed slowly between them. Between the lines of fear of losing her again and his blame for her death, he began to wonder why he had accepted another post aboard the SR-2. Unable to hide his nervousness, he spoke to her, staring deep into her ice blue eyes. "Where did I go wrong, Shepard?" He looked at her attempting to hide any emotion from his voice. "I lost a friend when you died. Shepard, I would have stayed up with you all night, followed you to the ends of the galaxy, but most importantly, I NEVER would have left you to die had I known I could have saved your life!"
Shepard looked to Kaidan, noticing the emotion threatening to enter their conversation. "Kaidan, I know best, and you know that's true. I love you, and I am so sorry to have hurt you." She said softly, trying to slip past his defense, yet without granting him innocence. She had so many things she felt was wrong, things she had been trying to tell him all along. "I just, well, I wish you understood all of this." She said, praying to God he heard everything she had been trying to tell him. "Kaidan, I lost a friend that day too. Somewhere along in the bitterness, I managed to forgive you for everything you said, I just wish you could do the same." She said as tears filled her eyes.
Kaidan began to raise his voice, the emotions he had suppressed beaming to the surface. "Shepard, you were working with the sworn enemy of the Alliance! What was I supposed to do!" He yelled, shocked at his own anger as his biotic aura flared slightly. The darkened room began to illuminate a bright blue.
Shepard lowered her voice. She loved this man, and would do anything to save him, but could she save him from his self? "Kaidan, I'm granting you one last choice. "I can love you, and work things out with you, or we can go our separate ways forever, both being miserable." She feared he could never surpass the prejudices he set for himself, that this was her breaking from the road she's followed for so long.
Kaidan could do one of two things: He could admit to everything his heart said, or he could say he's just not the same. Kaidan again wondered why he'd come on board the Normandy again. He knew the answer even before he finished his thought. "Shepard, do you know why I accepted another posting on the Normandy?" He asked her, his chocolate eyes starting deep into her ice blue ones.
Shepard noticed an immediate change in Kaidan's expression as he finished his question. She shook her head, urging him to continue. She was genuinely intrigued as to why he wanted back on her ship after everything that had been said between them on Horizon.
Kaidan lowered his voice to a barely audible whisper as he pulled her closely to him. "To save a life." He said into her ear as he held her tightly. "More importantly, to save your life, my love." He breathed as he kissed her. Nothing else mattered to him at this moment. He lost his love, his friend, and somewhere along in the bitterness he realized that he knew that to save her life, again, he had to be with her no matter the cost. He was ready to fight for her and swallow his pride.
