"Unknown Guardian"

Water all around me, cooling my heated protoform.

The night is cool, considered an average temperature for this alien planet.

A curious local—a child, unafraid, courageous, or just unintelligent?

She questions me, her words unintelligible to my foreign design.

"Are you the tooth fairy?"

Ignore her; time to rendezvous at Bumblebee's coordinates.

I tuck myself behind the local flora.

Undoubtedly alerted by my landing, the child's caretakers rush to her as I hide.

I scan for a compatible alt. mode, and I can hear them.

"Hey sweetheart what are you doing out here by yourself?"

The male's words are nonsense to me, but I can hear his worry, his fear.

Understandably afraid of the destruction I left in my wake.

Afraid for the safety of his offspring and consequently his species.

Smart of him if he knew of my species history.

Having found a form suited for blending in, I smirk at my last thoughts regarding the family.

For the rest of their lives, they would probably never know.

In those few moments with me there, their daughter was the safest she would ever be.

A/N: Whoa, so I've never written a poem before—besides that time in sixth grade...but let's not talk about that...

I know it's not really a poem, but it's not a story either. I actually tried the story format. Tried and failed. This piece wanted to be in poem format and in first person...present tense no less...

It is possible Ironhide actually did know what they were saying, but I used my creative license to delay his visit to the web. In my opinion it makes the piece feel more "alien".

I was inspired to write this when my dad and I were watching the whole Arrival to Earth scene (love that song FYI) and he laughed and told me, "They don't even know that those were the safest moments of that kid's life." It stuck with me for such a long time, until I eventually wanted to get it out of my head and on "paper". And from there I wanted to share it. And here we are.
