Chapter 1: Things Change
All had known Hermione Granger to be the bookworm and know it all of Hogwarts. The bushy haired girl that was over looked by boys and that everyone knew to be best friends with Harry Potter and Ron Weasley. The last school term things had changed for Hermione and Ron and they finally admitted that both liked each other more than just friends and had started to date. Thing went south quickly after that as Hermione refused to jump in bed with him on the first night. He started to sleep around on her and was very controlling after she refused him. She ignored it for the first few weeks thinking she was being paranoid and in secure, after all she really had not dated much before this. It wasn't until she found his list of girls he had slept with that she realized she had been a complete fool. They broke up after that and had tried to stay friends after that. Not an easy task.
It was now toward the end of August and almost time to go back to school for Hermione's final year at Hogwarts. Hermione had changed very much over the summer break. She needed it and welcomed a new start. She had completely changed her hair style so now it lay in controlled curls and not a mess of bushy brown hair. She had also started to dress differently with things that fit tighter and complimented her curves to show she wasn't some little girl any longer but a blossoming young woman. She just carried herself better with more confidence and a different kind of attitude.
Hermione was sitting on her bed reading a highly interesting book about transfigurations (Somethings you just couldn't alter) when her mother knocked on her bedroom door.
"May I come in darling?" She asked peaking her head in her daughters room.
"Of course," Hermione replied, "What's up?"
"Well first I wanted to give you this," She handed Hermione her Hogwarts letter.
"Oh good it finally came!" Hermione exclaimed opening the letter she so hope held the news on weather she would become head girl or not. She pulled out the parchment and unfolded it and there it was, the Badge Hermione had been hoping to get since she had found out about Prefects.
Her mother peaked over Hermione's shoulder and saw the badge and said, "OH HERMIONE! Congratulations! You got it!"
"Thank you mum! I can't believe I got it!" Hermione exclaimed giving her mother a hug.
"Well I can and I knew you would get it! Your so bright Hermione!" Her mother gushed over her only daughter, "Well now that you got your letter I think we need to make our usual run to diagon alley, What do you think darling?"
"I agree! I have SO much I need to get." Hermione replied.
"Ok good, so be ready to go in around 5 minutes then?" Her mother asked.
"Ok I'll be down then." Hermione said as her mother closed her door and left Hermione to get ready. She grabbed a bag out of her closet and put her robe inside to put on before she went into the Leaky Cauldron. She put on a pair of jeans a nice fitting v-cut top and headed down stairs with her bag and letter in hand.
They drove to London and came to a stop in front of the Leaky Cauldron. They parked the car and went inside Hermione leading the way. She stopped and threw on her robe as did her mother (She had been trying to blend in more with Hermione's lot when they went out together by at least dressing like a witch) and headed toward the brick wall to tap the according bricks to get to Diagon Alley.
They made their normal stops first at the apothecary, followed by Florish and Blots, then the Madam Malkins. The last shop took longer than usual as Hermione was not yet used to shopping quickly for clothes and really taking the time to make sure they were prepared just right and not just that they fit. When all was said and done Hermione walked out with new school robes, some day robes, some new winter time cloaks, and a beautiful new dress robe just in case. It was just about lunch time when they had finished with the robes when Hermione and her mother ran into Ginny, who had just came from Weasley's Wizarding Weazes visiting Fred and George.
"Ginny!" Hermione shrieked.
"Holly Merlin Hermione, is that really you?!" Ginny shrieked right back.
"Yeah its me!" Hermione said as they walked up to one another and hugged. "How are things going? Are you here on your own then?"
"Things are very good! Harry and Ron are playing quittiched today so I decided to come down to see Fred and George at their shop. As much as I love quittich, I'm not so keen on it with Ron around any more. But Harry I could defiantly play all day with him!" The girl both giggled and ginny blushed slightly at that. "You really look good Hermione! I still can't believe its you!"
Now Hermione was blushing, "Thank you it means the world that you say that, you know i've never been the most girly-girl out there and well look at you, always looking nice and, well not to over use the word but, girly." They laughed together. "So things are still good with Harry then?" Hermione asked curious about her friends.
"Oh yes! Things are so brilliant I almost think its too good to be true, almost as if it is all just a huge dream." Ginny replied.
"Well I'm glad if anyone could find happiness it was you and Harry." Hermione stated. She looked down at her watch, "Well I have to finish up my shopping so mum and I can eat lunch here soon! I'll see you on the express!"
"Yeah I have to get back before Harry starts to think He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named has come and stolen me!" The girls laughed knowing Harry would do just that!
They both hugged kissed each other on the cheek and went their separate ways. Hermione and her mother walk down the alley toward the Leaky Cauldron and went in to eat and rest from all their shopping. They sat down at the nearest table to the fire and as they sat Hermione noticed at tall teenaged boy standing in the dark corner of the room, she couldn't make out any of his features for lack of light but she was pretty sure he was a he and he seemed to be watching her and her mother as they entered. After almost 7 years of friendship with Harry Potter as your best friend you start to look out for such things and note who and what is around you and what they happen to be doing.
She tried to brush that watched feeling off as Tom the barman came up to take their order. Tom walked off to fetch their order Hermione peaked back toward the boy as she still had that feeling of being watched and sure enough as she turned to look at him his head turned and looked the other way. She had had enough of being watched so she excused herself and with her hand in her robe pocket she held her wand and walked toward the boy who was standing near the bathrooms. As she got closer she acted to be making her way to the bathroom hand still in her robes ready as always to strike when needed.
She got almost to the door she noticed that he had moved around the corner to follow her and with a shock she saw that it was Draco Malfoy standing there in the light of the room looking at her with a heated expression, not the loathing one he usually saved just for her. He had yet to recognize her other wise he would have hexed her already. she stopped as he tapped her softly on the should to get her attention but when he touched her a heated shock ran through them. It made Hermione jump and Draco have a shocked look on his face but he quickly composed himself and gave a her a quick smirk. She on the other hand frowned, her eyebrows coming together with a confused look on her face.
"What do you want?" she asked a little more harshly then she should have but after 6 years of nothing but harsh name calling and being jinxed and hexed made it a little hard for one to be nice.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to bother you but I don't think we have met and I just wanted to meet such a beautiful woman as you." Draco said very smoothly. Oh he was good, Hermione thought, if I didn't already know who or how he acted then yeah, and of course if he wasn't Malfoy!
Hermione laughed at him like a can't hold it in laugh and looked into his eyes, his very nice grey eyes...
"Hold on! Back that train of thought way up! Don't even think about that! This is MALFOY after all!"
Hermione thought to herself.
She shook her head and said, "You don't even realize..." But Draco cut her off before she could finish.
"So are you going to be going to Hogwarts this year or are you just here on a trip?" He asked.
"Yes of course I'm going to Hogwarts Malfoy, you prat!" She replied with a huge smile which surprised and worried her all at the same time.
"But how do you know my name?" He asked a bit surprised and shocked but he quickly stifled that and said,"Well either way I'm glad you are going to Hogwarts this way it make's it much easier to able to take you out on a date. So what's your name beautiful?"
"A date?" She stuttered a little astounded to think she had really changed that much. Apparently she had changed more than she realized herself or Malfoy wouldn't be courting her like this and would be instead calling her every despicable name he could muster, so she continued, "So you really don't recognize me then?" She asked this just to clarify that particular fact and in hopes of a last ditch effort to make sense of this crazy situation.
He crooked one of his eyebrows and looked her over again, of course he had to check her out from head to toe, and then as he came back to her face they locked eyes for a full 10 sec, before he finally let out a gasp that she knew would come. They only things was she couldn't tell weather it was either surprise or horror. She couldn't tell the difference as she had never hung around him long enough to grow to know his behaviors.
"GRANGER!" He exclaimed finally finding his lost voice. The gasp was defiantly surprise she thought rather than horror which worried her yet again but she let that go quickly as he tried to speak again, "I, uh, well..." He was speechless and as he struggled for a minute to find the right thing to say she had a look on her face of disappointment and a look of knowing. "Gryffandors were the worst at hiding there emotions just let them lay right there in the open for all to see." He thought to himself. He cleared his voice and started again before she walked away, "I see you made head girl then Granger."
"What, no insults or anything rude to say?" She asked and then said before he could reply, "Yes I did make head girl, thanks for noticing, as its good to know you might have noticed something else besides my body."
His pale cheek flushed a light pink and they both let slip a laugh and then caught themselves and stopped, "Well heres my reason for being so nice to you, so you don't get confused or any funny ideas," He said and she could hear in his voice that he was trying to put the firmness she was used to back in his but the damage was already done and she knew it was a losing battle as much as he did, but being kind, even if it was Malfoy, she played along. "I made head boy so you know as well as I that the head boy and girl stay in the same dormitory and share a common room, a kind of way to show the rest of the school that there is house unity." He cringed a bit at the last part, "So I have decided to try a different approach with you." He said matter-of- factly.
"Really," Hermione said raising her eyebrow now, curious to see where this new road was going. "So are you going to enlighten me with your brilliant plan or am I to just guess what it is?" She asked with smirk.
"Yes I am and if you wouldn't mind, to not interrupt me I can get it out before you start asking all your annoying questions as always.
So because we are staying together this year I figure we should try and get along as much as possible as I very much prefer the common room I stay at to be relaxing place to come in and unwind or study and I can't have that sanctuary if we are at each others throats all year, now can I?" He said smoothly.
She shook her head in agreement and then said, "I see what you mean as I like my common room the same way but unlucky for me Gryffandor is not the most come and collective house in the school so thats why I like the library so much." She replied. He now nodded his agreement to that as well and let her continue, "But yes, I do have to be going, my mother is waiting to eat and I'm holding her up! I'll see you around then." She said.
She was making her way around him with her mind rattling with everything that had just happened here when he said, "Yeah, I'll be seeing you Granger." Malfoy replied with trademark smirk and she couldn't help but smile as she walked past him.
"Bye." She said softly and walked away leaving him just as breathless as she was which was never a good sign and both of them knew that. He watched Hermione and her mother until they left the pub.
They drove home and Hermione was in a quiet stupor, just thinking and going over every little thing and analyzing things as she always did. Her mother said nothing just taking her being quiet as having been out all day. Hermione was fighting with herself all the home and as she walked into the house and up the stairs carrying her packages her mind stuck on silly stupid things like his eyes, or his smirk. Things she knew she should forget but couldn't and that bothered her. It felt like a weird Romeo and Juliet moment and Hermione was not liking the uncertainty of it all. She sat in her window seat and stared out the window until the stars grew bright. She had one of her new school books in hand ready to memorize the book but she couldn't concentrate on that but instead on the new head boy, Malfoy.
"Oh what a year this is going to be..." Hermione said as she got up , put her book away and went to lay down to sleep, and she slowly feel into an uneasy sleep. Little did she know though was that Malfoy's change in attitude and reaction would be the smallest of the many drastic changes she would be going through that year...
