I broke into a slow jog, mimicking a human, as I tried to find shelter from the rain. In truth, it didn't bother me much, but I was learning to act like a normal human would. There hadn't been much need for that in Maria's army. I slowed to a walk as I neared a near empty diner at the end of the street - Good, I thought. There were very few people in there to tempt me. Before entering, I braced myself for the confusing flurry of emotions I had come to expect. I gritted my as I tried to restrain myself. In spite of my overwhelming thirst, it was impossible for me not to notice the strange emotions emanating from somewhere in the diner. But the one that caught my attention the most was an overwhelming happiness. As I searched for the person they were coming from, I realized that person was walking, or dancing, right up to me with a glowing smile that lit up her pixielike features.

She had spiky, black hair; as I studied her face - after all, it wasn't very often that people approached me like this - I realized with a shock that her eyes were deep crimson.

She was a vampire.

"You've kept me waiting a while," she said in a high, musical voice. "I'm sorry, ma'am," I replied, for lack of anything else to say. What could she be talking about? I couldn't recall ever meeting her before. She laughed, her red eyes sparkling; she held out her hand. Despite my surprise, I took it without hesitation. I had no idea why I already trusted her so much; I flashed back to when I had met Maria, Nettie, and Lucy. But how could I not trust her?

For the first time in almost a century, I felt hope.
