The Sign Of The Beaver: Alternate Ending
What if his father never came? What if nobody else moved there? This is an alternate universe. This is what could've been.
Matt seemed to be more anxious every day. Attean still came every other day to check on Matt. He always asked Matt if he wanted to move with the village. He denied like usual.
… October-14-1730…
The wind was blowing a blood curdling frozen song as it whistled through the leafless trees. Matt awoke with the fire in kindling ashes. He reset the fire and set the morning water to warm for tonight's stew. He walked out the building. The dog followed him out. Matt looked at the dog. He remembered how kind Attean and Saknis were to him. He would always be their white brother.
Later when he was pulling out some pumpkins he noticed his hand. He figured that when he was done he would pour some warm water on it. Then he would put some ointment on his hand. The ointment was made from things like nuts and leaf extract. The hand was healing, but very slowly. It still was still swollen.
Week after week passed. "No sign of Pa," Matt muttered grimly. " I hope he's safe." Matt looked up. He could see the birds flying high in the sky. He knew for some reason even though he was the only person out here, he wasn't alone.
…December-15-1730…
They watch him every day. They don't speak any known language. They are fast. He relied on them. (When they were gone.)He only had what he grew. He only had the dog. He wasn't much of a talker. He almost went crazy. But he came through for himself he talked himself through his state.
…Somewhere in present day Rhode island…
The frozen chill was getting to him. He was packing just a small rifle. He wondered if it was the right choice to leave so close to winter. Earlier he was walking through a dense forest. He stumbled and sprained his ankle. He didn't take it into mind at the time but it slowed him down until he had to stay in one spot for a week. This is what put him behind. He didn't have any warm insulated coats. He knew he was going to freeze. He felt regret. He yelled into the frozen night "Matt, I'm sorry." He used the last of his energy and fell to his knees then onto the ice.
…Back in Maine…
Matt felt his heart sink as he noticed his father not come. It was changing from spring to summer. It was almost a year he'd been here. He didn't think his family was going to come back. He would have to make bigger clothes for himself, as he got older. He was also going to have to return a city to get a property exchange into his name. He would have to get his mother and sister himself. He knew he was the man now.
