Title: All She Has
Author: Megan or PITAchic, whichever you prefer.
Rating: K+
Disclaimer: Though it breaks my heart to say this, I must sadly admit that I own nothing that has anything to do with the brilliant and amazing show that is Lost.
Spoilers: Takes place sometime after "What Kate Did", sequel to my fic 'All She Needs'
Couple: Sawyer/Claire
Author's Note: I am so proud of myself! I actually wrote both a sequel and a prequel to my story 'All She Needs'. So, this one here is the sequel. I'm not as proud of it as I am ASN, but I was kinda drawing a blank on the end, and this is what I came out with. This one does have a bit more fluff, though
For those of you who haven't yet read 'All She Needs,' please read that first or you may not understand this :)
She notices the crashing of the waves and how they mix in with the drawl of his voice as he reads from his book. She's heard this story already; whether it was only once before or twenty times before, she isn't sure anymore.
But the one thing she does know is the ending. The endings of his stories never change. The same way her days never change.
The other survivors have moved on by now; no one's come to see her in a long time. Besides him.
She looks over at Sawyer, taking the time to really look at him; his reading glasses are on, and his blue shirt is dirty and thin with time. And suddenly, like an epiphany, she realizes that this man beside her is all she has now.
She can't bring Aaron back. No matter how long she sits here, no matter how much he reads to them, her little boy is gone. And she's wasting away into nothing, day by day.
The sunlight is fading when he stands up. He dusts the sand off his worn jeans, and then offers her his right hand, his book and glasses held securely in his left.
"Would ya like to go get dinner with me?" He asks, voice as full of hope and concern now as it was the very first time he asked.
She stares at his hand for a moment, considering. She doesn't want to be predictable anymore, like the endings of all those books have become to her.
She slips her hand into his for the first time.
"I would love to," she responds, and the look of shock on his face is enough to make her smile as he helps her up.
As he turns and starts to lead the way to camp, she stops him. What can she say to him now to let him know how much she appreciates what he's done?
Unable to find any words, she pulls him in for a silent hug. He kisses her forehead, and from the look in his eyes she can tell he already knows.
Sawyer will always read to them.
But her ending is going to change.
