Author's Note: This is based off of the the video game "The Darkness" at the part where Jackie kills himself and meets Anthony in the trenches. The story is told by one of the British soldiers who was in the same trench. This is my very first fanfic EVER so I hope you like it!
The Darkness and none of its characters belong to me obviously.
...
Sometimes I wonder if the Darkness created us. There's times when I wonder who I truly am. Being in this warped Hell makes you wonder if there's any good in the world and if you've lost your soul or not. Many have lost their minds and are crippled, screaming and rambling on about nothing.
We knew Jackie was coming before our sentry spotted him moving about in No Man's Land. The Darkness had been agitated and the world beyond our trench shifted and changed drastically.
He died. More specifically, he killed himself. The Darkness was outraged, so it brought down its rage on us. It made shells rain down more than usual out in No Man's Land and it made Fritzie's planes swoop in and fire on us.
Our sentry was fuming at Jackie; telling him that he was giving away our position and calling him an idiot.
Jackie pressed on through the trench, into the village after Corporal Greenwood gave Jackie his cryptic advice about the Tunnels. "I've seen things down there that'd made a grown man cry." Of course he has, we all have.
Anthony made the lads ring the church bells; he wanted Jackie to meet him in the church basement. Anthony had the answers that young Estacado was seeking and Jackie had the man power to bring the Darkness under control.
We couldn't do anything about the Darkness and its twisted ways. We knew it and resented it. We would bring down one of the Huns and he would just get back up again. It was bloody unnatural and we hoped Jackie would be able to help.
Young Estacado did go to the Hills and he did retrieve the darkness guns. It took us centuries of fighting for the Hills with no victory while it took Jackie no time to leave and come back. Even Anthony was surprised.
Jackie left us behind then and we waited for his return. He came back eventually. The second time he returned, our morale sky rocketed and most of us had gone. Hazelgrove, Greenwood, Elridge, and many others had left, but Jamie Fox and I remained in the village to express our gratitude to Jackie and answer his questions.
Then off he went with Anthony to the castle. Anthony never came back. The Darkness killed him trying to protect its secrets. But the rest of us were soon released from this Hell.
I never saw Jackie again after that.
But thanks to Jackie I finally found a piece of mind. I was finally free. I had forgotten what freedom was, but the feeling of it came back soon enough.
I died a long time ago, but my soul has finally came to rest.
