Sorry
She could feel the burning tears in her eyes and before she could control her emotions, her hand connected hard against his face. Taking a minute to recover, he reached up and dabbed at the corner of his mouth.
"I guess I deserved that."
"You deserve worse than that," she said shakily.
"Megan…"
The way he had said her name was as if last night never happened and they were just hanging out on a normal Saturday afternoon. Even though she promised herself she wouldn't make eye contact with him, she looked right into his intense blue gaze.
"I never meant to hurt any of you."
"Well, I guess that plan backfired because you did."
Her admission was more painful than she had expected as she struggled to keep the tears from falling. She watched him as he fidgeted with his hands, folding and unfolding them.
"I'm sorry," he said simply.
She let out a bitter laugh and rolled her eyes.
"You're sorry?" she snorted incredulously. "Sorry doesn't cover betraying your friends. It's a little too late for apologizes."
He looked away and stared down at the cuffs around his wrists.
"You're right. But, I am sorry, Megan, I really am."
In that moment, she almost felt twinge of remorse for her former teammate. She just wanted to forget the past week, forget the fact that she was sitting across from a double agent.
"Me too, Colby, me too."
Standing up from her metal seat, she walked away without a second glance.
"That was quick."
Megan looked up at the guard standing at the door with his arms folded across his chest. She simply shrugged her shoulders.
"There really wasn't much to say."
"For what it's worth, I would have beaten the guy to a pulp. You're handling this pretty well."
"Thanks, Frank," she replied.
"Take care, Reeves. Don't get too disillusioned."
She smiled slightly.
"You too."
When she was finally outside again, Megan let out the breath she hadn't realize she was holding in.
"You okay?"
His voice startled her as she approached her car. Don was leaning against the driver's side door. Nodding her head, she stood right next to him.
"I punched him," she confessed, rubbing her knuckles.
"He deserved it."
She sighed.
"I guess."
They stood in silence for a few minutes, each lost in their own thoughts.
"If you don't mind me asking," Don said, finally. "What did he say?"
Closing her eyes, she took a moment before answering.
"He said he was sorry," she replied. "It's weird, I walked in there ready to give him Hell and I just, I couldn't. I always prided myself for being able to read people and as stupid as it sounds, I believed him. When he looked at me and apologized, I honestly believed him."
A single tear escaped her eye as she leaned her head into the crook of Don's neck. He placed a gentle kiss on her temple and draped a comforting arm around her shoulders.
"We must be both stupid," he admitted, after a moment. "I believe him too."
Fin for now
