One Piece, a Maximum Ride fanfic

Max POV

Life is like a puzzle: many small, unique pieces that fit together perfectly, and in only one way. Occasionally, parts of the puzzle break, although over time, they're usually put back together again.

Not for me. My life began falling apart before I was even born, leaving me to try to pick up the pieces.

School was like a puzzle factory line: you started out whole, then they cut you up into thousands of small pieces, breaking you apart. As with any manufactures product, you then went through thousands of rigorous trials to see if you would hold up. After that, you were thrown out.

Jeb was like the worker who decided to take some of the puzzles being thrown away home with him. He had helped to design and test them, so access to the throwaways was easy. He put the broken puzzles together again, with care, trying to make them whole despite the missing pieces.

Then, like everyone else who finishes puzzles, he set them aside. They were done, complete, with nothing left to do. He had learned to love them, and always would. But that didn't stop him from tearing up apart again.

He tore us apart like a child who loves a puzzle so much they take it apart so they can put it together again. He tried to make the pieces fit together more perfectly; an impossibility due to the scars the rigorous tests had left on our lives. He tried to improve us, but only managed to destroy us again.

What a careless puzzlemaker.
