This fanfic takes place after Catherine has confided in Nelly about her feelings for Heathcliff, and Heathcliff runs for the emptiness of the moors, feeling he has been betrayed by Catherine

I went and called for the naughty child, but to no avail, I could not find him.

I returned to the hearth and asked Miss Cathy to help me search, with such new information of his disappearance she flung poor Hearton into a seat and ran from the room.

For a while she did not return, when finally she was required to come into our presence to enquire whether we had heard of him her hair was wild and her nightgown torn.

'Nelly, Nelly! Have you seen him, I have wondered the barn and house and still I see no sign of him!'

'I am sorry Miss Cathy, but I have not seen him since supper, and he was in a black mood when he left' I replied.

'But Ellen! He heard us speak , he heard my musings, what must he think!' She said raising her hands to her face in horror'

'Miss Catherine, I am sure he is just sulking some where, he shall return in time'

I was forbidden from hearing her reaction as Joseph entered , bringing the cold air from the moor with him.

'Tha' yon devil of a gypsy! He's left ta gat' open an' 'aken off across ta moor! Miss's pony ha' escaped and ruined ta' harvest!

'No' cried Catherine, 'Go look for him, go, you fool' With surprising violence she heaved him out of the door, and turned wildly . Before she could set her bitter words on me Joseph cried in anger at her foolishness.

'Ya wild animal ye! Heathcliff's noan t' chap tuh coom at maw whistle, perhaps e' will be less 'ard o hearing wen I get 'im!'

She cut past his bulky frame and shot out the door, I leaving my needlework ran after her into the cold night.

After some foolish fumbling through the wind I found her sobbing near the low wall, shouting:

'Heathcliff , Heathcliff!

I tried to turn her away from the wind, as the sky blackened further, threatening rain .

She pushed me away and pulled wildly at my hair, almost foaming at the mouth like a wild beast. She yelped further into the night as I retreated inside, leaving her to her own devices.

When the rain came, she banged about the door and came in , her eyes wide and staring.

I moved out of my chair to let her pass, and wrap her sodden frame in blankets. She shook off my failing fingers and proceeded to the harth, where she turned, eyes a flame, to face me.

'Ellen! ' She cried suddenly ' Release him, I know you have him, locked him in the barn you have!'

'Miss Cathy' I stuttered confused

'Nelly hold your biting tongue, or throw you to the dogs I shall, you witch !'

'Catherine' I said firmly ' You are delusional and have a fever, you need to retire to you bed, and we shall have no more of this nonsense'

She seemed to mellow and her face changed, she crumpled to the floor, weeping and whispering the boys name over and over again, until I summoned Hindley and we removed her to her room at the top of the house.

Doctor Kenneth was called and he attended to her, declaring she had a dangerously high fever which had made her lash out. He ordered the whole Sabbath in bed and for her to be fed sops every sunrise for a week, until she had regained her strength.

I stayed by her bedside through her fitful night , and wondered whether he would ever return.
