Jace came into the bedroom dropping his coat onto one of the little wooden chairs in the bedroom he shared with Alec. He sighed and flopped down on the bed looking over at his parabatai who sat on his bed with a book propped on his knees.
"What are you reading?" Jace asked.
"Just a book on herbology." Alec answered not looking up.
"Herbology?"
Alec peered over the book at him looking annoyed. "Yes, herbology. I'm sick of hearing you whine about the teas and elixirs that you can't seem to recreate."
"So…you're studying herbology because?"
Alec sighed. "Because yet again, I am taking care of my parabatai."
"You love me you know it." Jace laughed.
"Sometimes I wonder." Alec retorted putting the book down. "How was your date with Clary?"
"She had some art exhibit thing with Simon tonight so we had to reschedule." Jace answered sounding irritated.
Alec sat up, "so where have you been all night? Were you out hunting demons without us?"
Jace shook his head. "No, I had a little errand to do."
Alec raised his eyebrow. "Really, what were you doing?"
"You know I love Clary." Jace began.
"No kidding…" Alec retorted.
Jace brushed it off. "Well, I've been considering this for a long time. Clary's eighteenth birthday is Saturday, and I wanted to do something special for her."
"What do you have in mind?"
Jace pulled a little velvet bag out of his pocket. He opened it and dropped a clear ring onto his palm.
Alec let out a low whistle and moved closer so he could look at it. "You're going to ask her to marry you?"
Jace nodded. "I wanted to wait till she was eighteen, that's the proper age when Shadowhunters get married."
"It's a bit on the young side." Alec said. "So what's with the ring? Isn't it customary to give her your family ring?"
"It is." Jace agreed. "But I wanted to also observe the mundane tradition of giving her an engagement ring. It's made exactly for her hand."
"Is it some kind of a crystal?" Alec asked picking it up out of Jace's hand.
"No, it's pure adamas."
"Adamas?" Alec breathed. "Where did you get that?"
"It was tricky, but I had help from a friend."
"Who?" Alec asked eyeing his parabatai curiously.
"Magnus,"
"Magnus?" Alec asked.
"It seems like Magnus can find just about anything, so I asked him to find it for me."
"Did you pay him?" Alec asked incredulously.
"No, he told me he couldn't accept payment for something this special for his biscuit."
Alec chuckled. "I love how he calls her that."
"What does it mean?"
"Not a clue. I think it's just because he likes her."
"So your errand tonight was to the Iron Sisters?"
"No," Jace answered. "Magnus formed it for me."
"He didn't say anything to me about this?" Alec said in confusion.
"I asked him not to."
"Why?"
" I wanted to tell you."
"I'm your parabatai, I should have been the first to know." Alec grumbled.
"I only just decided that I'm asking her on her birthday."
"And the ring?"
"I've had Magnus working on the Adamas for quite some time. It was only yesterday he told me that his mission was completed."
"His mission?" Alec chuckled.
Jace grinned. "Yes,"
"I bet there was lots of glitter involved." Alec laughed.
"Probably," Jace agreed.
Just then a sharp knock echoed through the room. Isabelle's muffled voice came through the door. "Will you two PLEASE SHUT UP. I'm trying to get my beauty sleep!"
"Sorry!" Alec yelled rolling his eyes.
They heard Isabelle march across the hall and slam her door.
"Beauty sleep…" Jace said laughing so hard he had tears in his eyes.
Alec threw a pillow at him. "Go to bed romeo."
