"Veronica!" the young boy said stubbornly to his best friend. "Veronica Mars. She's amazing."
"A Mars in Neptune?" the second laughed, "Do you see why I don't believe you?"
"Shut up, Logan, you're being stupid."
"I'm being stupid? Tell me, Duncan, how long have you known this 'Veronica Mars'?"
"God, Logan, she's real," a third voice chirped. This one belonging to a small girl.
"Okay, maybe she's real, but Duncan seems to think she's some sort of angel in knee socks."
"I won't comment on the knee socks but she kind of is." The girl cast a wary look at the boys behind her.
"Expand, Lily."
"All three of you. Shut. Up." A fourth, older, female voice joined. "Look, we're here."
All fourof them looked out the window of the small car to see a sign reading "Welcome to Neptune".
"We're here, we're here, we're here," Lily bounced up and down in her seat.
A few minutes later they were entering into a gated community.
"Oooo!" Lily started to bounce in her seat again. "Turn here, Trina! It's Dick's street!"
"Dick?" Logan scoffed, leaning over Duncan to get a better look at exactly was Lily was seeing. Sure enough a few houses down there was a blond boy about the size of himself who was unmistakably the one called "Dick". He was standing next to a girl, who was much smaller and appeared to be a younger sibling, perhaps.
The car pulled to a stop in front of the two children as a third came out to join them. None of the three appeared to have noticed the car or the three children climbing out of it to join their company.
"Look, Ronnie, you're friends are here," a boy amounting in size only barely to Veronica, who was small for the age of twelve, said, rolling his brown eyes as the three children from the car ran up the driveway.
"Veronica!" Lily screamed her blonde- brown hair streaming behind her as she quickly approached the petite blonde.
"Lily!" Veronica screamed back pulling the girl into a hug.
Lily pulled away and her eyes seemed to signal that Veronica should look at Duncan, who was making an effort to look cool as he ambled up to her, though his face was bright pink. "Hey, V." he said coolly, or at least what he though was coolly, but came out quite shakily.
The third to join their number was Logan, who was making no effort at all but doing a much better job at looking cool as he approached the girl he honestly felt no desire to meet, especially after the past two hours of Duncan proclaiming how absolutely amazing she was.
He seemed however to have a change of heart when he really saw the girl.
She was a head shorter than him, surprisingly, for he thought he was quite short for twelve and a half. She had long blonde hair, longer and blonder than Lily's. Her hair reached all the way down her back and for a moment he felt a pang at his heart for he thought what might happen if she ever decided to cut it. She was wearing a small white shirt, the words "Neptune Girl's Soccer" written in green, to match her shorts, and the striped on her knee high socks.
"Hi," she said sweetly. And Logan couldn't help but think maybe she was a little naïve, a bit of a harsh accusation for a twelve year old boy to be making, but he was quite right. As beautiful as he thought she was, he still thought Lily better, for lack of a better word.
"Hi," he repeated back.
"Logan, right?" Maybe she was an angel in knee socks.
"Yeah, Logan."
"Welcome to Neptune… Logan."
And he was in love.
