1. Haru's Transformation

Rin promised his homestay parents, Russel and Lori, to stay onto the island for one night before focussing back onto their swimming regime. He thought it would be a nice break, and what could possibly go wrong?"

"I tell you what can go wrong!" Makoto exclaimed as Rin steered the boat towards the island called Mako. Haru was sitting next to him looking at the water with anticipated eyes while Rei tried to block Nagisa out as he tried to disturb him from reading a book.

Rin sighed. "Makoto, it's just an island."

"Surrounded by sharks and sharp reefs! We can get stuck and eaten." A chill runs down Makoto's spine as the idea rolls through his head. "Besides, it's also invested with wild animals."

Rin laughed. "Don't worry, Makoto. I packed enough bug spray to protect—and Haru is about to jump overboard."

"HARU!" Makoto exclaimed in panic then grabbed his childhood friend's arm and pulled him away from the side before he had the chance to hurl himself over it. "There are sharks, Haru!"

Rin grins; "Don't worry, Makoto, we're already there."

And with that, the red haired boy steers the boat close enough to the shore then Nagisa jumps off and disappears into the jungle.

"Rei, could you hand me those boxes and stuff?" Rin asked.

Makoto eyes the jungle Nagisa disappeared into then asks, hesitant; "Tell me we are not gonna camp in there."

"Yes we are," Rin smirked then pushed a few boxes into Haru's arms and directed him a head towards the jungle. Then he grabs the camping gear and hoists it over his shoulder before following Haru and Rei to the trees.

Makoto remains by the boat, but ultimately decides to follow his friends into the bug invested jungle.

After a ten minute walk, Makoto's fears start to take the better of himself again.

"You know, one of use could break a leg and no one knows we are here."

Rin rolled his eyes. "Russel and Lori know."

"Yes, but then it could even take days. I mean, it's not uncommon for teenagers like us to stay a while longer on a camping trip. They might not be alarmed for days. What will we do then, huh?"

Nagisa shrugged. "We can always draw straws to decide which one of us the others will eat."

"That's not funny, Nagisa!"

Rei nods agreed. "Yeah, I'm with Makoto. You really should not make jokes like that."

Rin sighed. "Guys, the mainland is only a boat trip away. If something happens, we just take the boat back, okay? Can we just relax and enjoy this little break?"

"I might have found the perfect camping spot!" Nagisa said and pointed over to an open spot.

A few hours later, the gang managed to set up the tents and prepared some stuff to cook. All they could find was mackerel.

"Haru!"

"What? I like mackerel, okay?"

Rin slapped his forehead.

It slowly turned dark by the time they finished their meal and Rei decided to read his book in his tent. Rin however had a different plan.

"Rei, you're coming with us! There are some cool caves up ahead which we can explore."

Rei wanted to object but Nagisa grabbed his arm and dragged him along as he follows Rin, Haru, and Makoto.

After walking almost an half hour through the jungle, the gang reach the foot of the island volcano. Obviously Rin still wasn't bored after the long walk because he continues climbing up. Then they reach what seems like a slippery ledge split by a small stream that ends into a waterfall.

"It looks like we have to jump across it if we want to walk further," Rin said.

Haru looks down to the water and his eyes start to glint in glee.

"Haru, don't you dare. It's too dangerous to swim here," Rin said then pulled Haru away from the ledge.

Then, not looking where he puts his own feet, Rin lost his footings and fell down an hole pulling Haru with him down.

"Ouch!" Rin grunted when he landed on top of Haru. Haru didn't flinch at all, then Rin rolled off of him to take in their new surroundings.

"Guys, are you alright?!" Nagisa yelled as he, Rei, and Makoto rushed closer then peered down the dark hole. He then used a flashlight to look inside.

Rin looks up then shouts back; "Yeah, we're fine! We just need something to pull ourselves-

Rin couldn't finish his sentence because he gets knocked back to the ground when Nagisa came sliding down. The blonde teenager looks around in awe.

"Nagisa, what are you doing? You're supposed to stay at the top with the others, throwing a rope to pull us back up!"

Nagisa grins at the red haired boy. "And let you two have all the fun? No way, I wanna know what's down here."

"Makoto, it's up to us now. I'll head back to camp to get a rope."

Makoto nods then Rei jumps to his feet a little too fast and slips. Makoto tries to grab a hold onto his friend's hand, but it was futile. Rei pulled him down with him and the both of them knocked Rin back down while he just got back up after Nagisa bowled him down.

"Seriously?! Neither of you can give me a warning or something?"

Taking no notice of Rin, Makoto gasped; "Where's Haru?"

Nagisa points ahead then replies; "I saw him dashing that way."

Makoto pushes himself past Nagisa and starts to try find his way in the dark cave to reach his childhood friend. Rin scrambled to his feet for a third time then dusted his clothes off before reaching a hand to Rei.

"Rin, when you said we would have a nice break, this is not what I expected," Rei said then grabs Rin's hand and hoists himself back to his feet. Then he dusts the dirt off as well before putting his glasses back on.

Rin sighs in reply then suddenly they hear Makoto's signature scream that indicates Haru is in trouble. The three friends quickly rush further into the cave to find their missing friends.

"I think it's this way," Rei and Rin heard Nagisa say then they followed him up a few steps then turned around a narrow corner and found themselves inside an open space.

"Whoa," Rei said when he looked around, lifting his glasses further up his nose as he looked up. "Are we inside a dormant volcano?"

"Looks like it," Nagisa replied then looks back down and spots an oval shaped pool in the middle of the cave, parallel aligned with the cone. Haru was floating in the water of the pool.

Makoto stood closely to the poolside with his hand outstretched, telling Haru to take it and come out the pool. Haru took no notice of it and just kept floating with his eyes closed.

"Makoto, I'm pretty sure it's a harmless pool. How about we just sit here and wait until he gets bored and gets out himself? Or better yet, join him."

"It will only encourage him, Rin. What I want is get out of this place because I get a creepy vibe."

Nagisa smirks; "You always get a creepy vibe about everything, Mako-chan. Just look at him float. Rin is right. It's just a pool."

"I have to agree with Makoto-senpai on this," Rei said. "This place does have a creepy vibe."

Nagisa and Rin snorted but then a bright light fell inside the cave. When they looked up they saw the full moon passing over the cone, slowly. The light bounced off into the water, illuminating the water into a bright, light blue glow.

"That's not normal!" Makoto exclaimed then stretched his hand back out towards Haru who didn't seem to be bothered by the situation. Or he simply wasn't aware of it. "Haru, get out!"

Tiny bubbles of bright glowing water started to float upwards into the volcano while the remaining water in the pool bubbled as if it was reaching its boiling point.

"HARU!"

After the creepy stuff in the cave was over, Haru dove underwater and swum away while his friends kept yelling at him to come back. After a short while he did and told them the pool lead to the ocean outside. All they had to do was swim 50 meters before coming back up for air.

After debating for an hour whether the water was save or not, they decided they had no other option and swum out. Then they returned to the beach, packed their stuff and jumped onto the boat.

"I've been here before, he said. Nothing happened, he said."

Rin retorted back; "Hey, how should I know this place had a creepy cave?! Besides, maybe it was just something normal. I mean, look at Haru. He seems fine."

"Just let's go back to your house, okay?" Rei said and looked at Rin.

They all nodded then jump on board of the boat and Rin steers it back towards the mainland. An hour later they enter the house. Russel and Lori were already up.

"You guys are back early," Russel said.

Makoto sinks onto a kitchen chair and whimpers; "That island is a creepy place. I won't step foot onto it, ever again."

Without warning the others, Haru went upstairs to take a bath.

After telling Rin's homestay parents about their awful camping experience, Makoto decided to look for Haru and ask him if he would join them at breakfast.

"Haru! Don't you think you 'marinade' in the tub long enough?!"

Makoto entered the bathroom then when his eyes lock onto his childhood friend, his jaws drop agape. Haru was lying in the bathtub staring shell-shocked at where his legs used to be, but they were replaced by a long, blue tail.
